On the Logical Foundations of Schema Integration and Evolution in Heterogeneous Database Systems

چکیده
Developing a declarative approach to schema integration in the context of heterogeneous database systems is a major goal of this research. We take a rst step toward this goal in this paper, by developing a simple logic called SchemaLog which is syntactically higher-order but has a rst-order semantics. SchemaLog can provide for a logical integration of multiple relational databases in a federation of database systems. We develop a xpoint theory as well as a sound and complete proof theory for the deenite clause fragment of SchemaLog and show their equivalence to the model-theoretic semantics. We argue that a uniform framework for schema integration as well as schema evolution is both desirable and possible. We illustrate the simplicity and power of SchemaLog with a variety of applications involving database programming (with schema browsing), schema integration, schema evolution, and cooperative query answering.

Research in the area of data integration has resulted in approaches such as federated and multidatabases, mediation, data warehousing, global information systems, and the model management/schema matching approach. Architecturally, approaches can be categorized into those that integrate against a single global schema and those that do not, while on the level of inter-schema constraints, most wor...
متن کاملSchema architectures and their relationship to transaction processing in distributed database systems
We discuss the different types of schema architectures which could be supported by distributed database systems, making a clear distinction between logical, physical, and federated distribution. We elaborate on the additional mapping information required in architecture based on logical distribution in order to support retrieval as well as update operations. We illustrate the problems in schema...

Dynamic schema evolution is the ability of the database schema to evolve by incorporating changes to its structure without loss of existing data and without significantly affecting the dayto-day operations of the database. A very large body of literature exists today reflecting the extensive work addressing schema evolution and its management. Schema evolution has three well-defined and inter-r...

In previous work we have developed a general framework to support schema trans...
