Remote Sensing and Coastal Ecosystem Monitoring in French Guiana: Research and Achievements over a Decade
نویسنده
چکیده
The coastal ecosystems of French Guiana are very complex and changing due to the presence of huge quantities of mud originating from the Amazon. have been studied for more than a decade. Due to access difficulties through both land and sea, the use of remote sensing has always been essential, and the understanding of the complex landscapes was greatly improved when airborne and spaceborne imaging sensors began to be systematically used. However, the implementation of remote sensing techniques has to face specific difficulties due the typical geographical characteristics of humid tropical landscapes (cloud cover, complexity, rapid changes) and to the lack of infrastruture. In this paper the geographical and scientific context of French Guiana are presented with emphasis on coastal environment, and the result of research efforts over a decade are summarized. Two important aspects are considered, namely, remote sensing data acquisition and coastal landscape characterization in the humid tropics.

Remote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters
Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...

The impacts of land utilization change on the ecosystem service values in Daqing during 1995 to 2015 were analyzed based on unit area ecosystem service value of Chinese territorial ecosystem from Mr. Xie Gaodi and ecosystem service value calculation formula from Costanza. Results showed that the ecosystem service value of Daqing decreased from US $4343.1559m in 1995 to US $3824.327m in 2015, wi...

In response to development concerns, a new University is being established in French Guiana. Several research institutions that are working locally on Amazonian topics (biodiversity, geoscience, diseases, languages etc.) have been consulted to propose high level education programmes in the related fields. Since remote sensing is a key technology for the development of tropical regions, the remo...
