چکیده

There is no agreement in the litterature about the de nition of integrity constraints in the context of data and/or knowledge bases. What kind of property people want to guarantee using integrity constraints? Is it the property of consistency of database content or the completeness of database content [6] or validity or completeness of database content with regard to the world [3] or some properties that should hold in the world of a given application domain [1] There is no unique answer to this question. It depends on the intention of users. However, even if we accept that integrity constraints are intended to impose constraints about di erent kinds of properties, it would be interesting to know what are the di erences and common features, and what are the implicit assumptions for each kind of constraints.

Merging Information Under Constraints: A Logical Framework

The paper considers the problem of merging several belief bases in the presence of integrity constraints and proposes a logical characterization of operators having a majority behaviour or a consensual one. Then a representation theorem in terms of pre-orders on interpretations is given. The close connection between belief revision and merging operators is shown and it is shown that the proposa...

Deriving Spatial Integrity Constraints from Geographic Application Schemas

Integrity constraints of various kinds must be observed when creating or updating a database in order to preserve the semantics and the quality of stored data (Elmasri & Navathe, 2000). Within the scope of geographic applications, integrity assurance requires special attention from the designer, since most geographic applications use data that depend on spatial relationships (Egenhofer & Franzo...

From Query Answering to Satissability in Nonmonotonic Logics

We propose a unifying view of negation as failure, integrity constraints, and epistemic queries in nonmonotonic reasoning. Specii-cally, we study the relationship between satis-ability and logical implication in nonmono-tonic logics, showing that, in many nonmono-tonic formalisms, it is possible and easy to reduce logical implication to satissability. This result not only allows for establishin...

Reducing Query Answering to Satisfiability in Nonmonotonic Logics

We propose a unifying view of negation as failure, integrity constraints, and epistemic queries in nonmonotonic reasoning. Specifically, we study the relationship between satisfiability and logical implication in nonmonotonic logics, showing that, in many nonmonotonic formalisms, it is possible and easy to reduce logical implication to satisfiability. This result not only allows for establishin...

Reasoning with Enhanced Temporal Entity-Relationship Models

Recent efforts in the Conceptual Modelling community have been devoted to properly capturing time-varying information, and several proposals of temporally enhanced Entity-Relationship (ER) exist. This work gives a logical formalisation of the various properties that characterise and extend different temporal ER models which are found in literature. The formalisation we propose is based on Descr...
