Pediatric Exposures to Ionizing Radiation: Carcinogenic Considerations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Children are at a greater risk than adults of developing cancer after being exposed to ionizing radiation. Because of their developing bodies and long life expectancy post-exposure, children require specific attention in the aftermath of nuclear accidents and when radiation is used for diagnosis or treatment purposes. In this review, we discuss the carcinogenic potential of pediatric exposures to ionizing radiation from accidental, diagnostic, and therapeutic modalities. Particular emphasis is given to leukemia and thyroid cancers as consequences of accidental exposures. We further discuss the evidence of cancers that arise as a result of radiotherapy and conclude the review with a summary on the available literature on the links between computer tomography (CT) and carcinogenesis. Appropriate actions taken to mitigate or minimize the negative health effects of pediatric exposures to ionizing radiation and future considerations are discussed.

Special susceptibility of the child to certain radiation-induced cancers.
The carcinogenic effects of exposure to ionizing radiation vary markedly with age, as revealed by studies of Japanese atomic bomb survivors and of Marshall Islanders exposed to fallout from U.S. nuclear weapons tests in the South Pacific in 1954. An increase in cancers of adulthood after intrauterine exposure, as reported in 1988, has not been sustained. After childhood exposure, increases in l...

The effects of the chemical carcinogen 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene on long-wavelength ionizing radiation (grenz ray)-induced carcinogenesis in the skin of hairless mice were examined. A carcinogenic amount of the grenz energy (20,500 R) was applied over a 12-month period. A single application of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene 4 weeks before the initiation of the grenz ray exposures resulted ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Radiation Exposure Pattern and Radiation Absorbed Dose Resulting from Occupational Exposure of Anesthesiologists to Ionizing Radiation
Introduction: Little information is available concerning the radiation exposure of anesthesiologists, and no such data have previously been collected in Iran. This prospective study was performed to determine the amount of radiation exposure of anesthesiologists for the purpose of assessing whether or not dangerous levels of radiation exposures were being reached, and to identify factors that c...

Mechanistic models for radon progeny induced lung cancer risk have been developed, based on radiation mechanisms at the cellular level. The cellular effects relevant to radiation-induced carcinogenesis are transformation, cell killing, stimulated cell division, and removal from contact inhibition. متن کاملEstimating the Radiation-Induced Cancer Risks in Pediatric Computed Tomography
Introduction One of the central questions in radiological protection is the magnitude of the risks from low doses of radiation, related to the justification and optimization of the diagnostic medical exposures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the cancer incidence and mortality risks in children of different ages, sizes, and ethnicities undergoing computed tomography examination...
