Mechanical Properties of Alkali Borate Glasses

چکیده
A GLASS is, formally, a solid that solidifies without a well-defined melting point— defined as a singular temperature at which there occurs a discontinuous change in a physical property, for example specific volume, during transition between a liquid state and its corresponding solid state—but instead exhibits a continuous change in that property over a range of temperature. Glasses tend to inherit their atomic-scale structures from those of the liquids from which they evolve by cooling, and their structural arrangements are therefore necessarily less-ordered than those of corresponding crystalline arrangements. Such glassy arrangements are often termed amorphous, though formally again what is meant by this term is lack of the long-range translational and rotational regularity that characterize crystalline arrangements. All “amorphous” atom arrangements do not necessarily exhibit a formal glass transition, though many do. Good

Structural Investigation, Physical and Optical Properties of Mixed Alkali Bismuth Borate Glasses
Lead free, eco-friendly bismuth borate glasses doped with alkali oxides of composition xLi2O+(30-x)Na2O+55B2O3+15Bi2O3 (x = 5,10,15,20,25) were prepared by melt quenching technique. Amorphous nature of glasses was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Density measurements were carried out at room temperature by standard principle of Archimedes with Xylene as an immersion liquid. The non-linear ...

Quaternary tungstate glasses containing K2O, Na2O and B2O3 have been prepared by melt quench technique and studied by IR and Raman spectroscopy. Raman and infrared spectroscopy have been employed to investigate the (30−x)Na2O–xK2O–10WO3–60B2O 3 glasses in order to obtain information about the competitive role of WO3 and B2O3 in the formation of glass network. IR spectral study reveals the exist...
متن کاملInfrared reflectance studies of ionic conductive glasses. Network structure and cation dynamics
The results of our infrared reflectance studies of single and mixed alkali borate glasses are reviewed and discussed in the context of the network structure and the interactions between alkali cations and their sites in the glass. In particular, we focus on the strong influence of the alkali cation type, content, and alkali subsitution on the structure of the network building units. The dominan...
متن کاملOptical and Thermal Properties of Mixed Alkali Phosphate Based Glasses
Glassy samples with a composition of 40P2O5–30V2O5–(30-x)Li2O– xK2O, 0<x<30 (mol %) were prepared by the conventional melt quenching technique in two forms of bulk and blown film. X-ray diffraction patterns corroborated the amorphous feature of the samples. Density of samples was investigated by using Archimedes principle. Based on absorption and reflection spectra, indirect a...
متن کاملSilica-Based and Borate-Based, Titania-Containing Bioactive Coatings Characterization: Critical Strain Energy Release Rate, Residual Stresses, Hardness, and Thermal Expansion
Silica-based and borate-based glass series, with increasing amounts of TiO₂ incorporated, are characterized in terms of their mechanical properties relevant to their use as metallic coating materials. It is observed that borate-based glasses exhibit CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) closer to the substrate's (Ti6Al4V) CTE, translating into higher mode I critical strain energy release rates...
متن کاملDependence of N4 upon alkali modifier in binary borate glasses
In this paper we re-examine the alkali dependence of the fraction of four-coordinated borons (N4) in two series of glasses: alkali borates (0·4M2O.B2O3) and mixed lithium caesium borates (0·4(xLi2O+(1-x)Cs2O). B2O3). High field B MAS-NMR experiments were performed to maximise the accuracy of the present results. We found no evidence for an alkali dependence on N4 in either system. In each case ...
