چکیده

This paper uses data detailing ransom prices and time to ransom for over 10,000 captives rescued from the Barbary Corsairs between 1575 and 1739 to investigate the empirical relevance of dynamic bargaining models with one-sided asymmetric information. Our unique dataset includes information that only the buyer knew. In addition, we observe multiple negotiations that were similar (ex ante) from the uninformed party’s (seller’s) point of view. Empirical results suggest that existing dynamic bargaining models have substantial explanatory power both regarding the evolution of prices over time as well as how a variety of other factors affected bargaining outcomes. In particular, variation in the costs of bargaining between two corsair strongholds helps explain many of the observed outcome differences. ∗Harvard University and NBER. †Harvard University. The library staff at the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid and the Archivo Histórico Nacional facilitated the data collection. Judith Gallego provided outstanding research assistance. The Relationship between Efficiency of Healthcare Costs and Economic Growth: Empirical Validation from Mediterranean Countries

The increase of healthcare costs improved as a rule the health of the population. Sometimes the positive effects of this expense are shaded off. On one hand, this expense improves the offer of the medical care. Other influential factors on the health of population, we quote as example the training, the lifestyle, the hygiene and the distribution of income. On the other hand the increase of thes...

Analyzing the Costs of Collective Actions for Political, Administrative, and Economic Agents to Facilitate Investment

The processes of collective action of individuals within the government organization and the formation and modification of these processes in the private sector have fundamental differences with collective action. A collective action, either in the form of an activity or in the form of a reform of an entity, both has transaction costs for agents within the process. So, a collective action withi...

Legal Analysis of bank in the Iranian commercial market based on the theory of transaction costs

Understanding the necessity of establishing a bank in Iran requires a correct realizing of the mechanism of the money market in an era in which banks had no place or position. At that time distrusting on the borrower credits, lack of reliable information about the number and place of lenders, rising interest rates and the prevalence of high- interest borrowing were some of the costs that transa...

Dynamic Bargaining with Transaction Costs

A buyer and seller alternate making offers until an offer is accepted or someone terminates negotiations. The seller's valuation is common knowledge, but the buyer's valuation is known only by the buyer. Impatience to reach an agreement comes from two sources: the traders discount future payoffs and there are transaction costs of bargaining. Equilibrium behavior involves either immediate trade,...

Coase theorem, complexity and transaction costs

This paper, by introducing complexity considerations, provides a dynamic foundation for the Coase Theorem and highlights the role of transaction costs in generating inefficient outcomes in bargaining/negotiation. We show that, when the players have a preference for less complex strategies, the Coase Theorem is valid in negotiation models with repeated surplus and endogenous disagreement payoffs...
