Wall Shear Stress Analysis in Stenosed Carotid Arteries with Different Shapes of Plaque

چکیده
Atherosclerosis is a disease caused due to formation of plaque into the artery. Increase in plaque affects the wall shear stress. The present study is performed to calculate wall shear stress in different geometries of stenosed carotid artery. A 2D model of different geometries is generated using CFD for NonNewtonian model. After this WSS of different geometries of stenosed arteries is calculated and compared. Wall Shear Stress (WSS) of carotid arteries with smooth plaque, irregular plaque, cosine plaque and artery with blood clot is calculated. It is found that with increase of plaque in common carotid artery WSS increases. Irregular plaque causes highest WSS. Wall Shear Stress of opposite walls of carotid artery is compared where one wall is having blood clot into it and other one is healthy. Wall shear stress and local plaque development in stenosed carotid arteries of hypercholesterolemic minipigs
BACKGROUND Wall shear stress is thought to play a critical role in the local development of atherosclerotic plaque and to affect plaque vulnerability. However, current models and hypotheses do not fully explain the link between wall shear stress and local plaque development. We aimed to investigate the relation between wall shear stress and local plaque development in surgically induced common ...
متن کاملNumerical studies of blood flow in healthy, stenosed, and stented carotid arteries
Numerical analysis of pulsatile blood flow in healthy, stenosed, and stented carotid arteries is performed with the aim of identifying hemodynamic factors in the initiation, growth, and the potential of leading to severe occlusions of a diseased artery. The Immersed Finite Element Method is adopted for this study to conveniently incorporate various geometrical shapes of arteries without remeshi...
متن کاملSimulating blood flow and oxygen transport in stenosed large arteries
Altered flow and mass transfer patterns are thought to play an important role in the early onset of atherosclerosis. A disturbed wall shear distribution and the prevalence of hypoxic (low oxygen tension) are specifically believed to be atherogenic factors, which can function as a positive feedback on the development of atherosclerosis. In this work, blood flow and oxygen mass transport have bee...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Effect of Simplified and Patient-specific Arterial Geometry on Hemodynamic Flow in Stenosed Carotid Bifurcation Arteries
Numerous CFD studies have been performed on the motivation to elucidate the role of hemodynamic forces in the development of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries and the carotid bifurcation artery. In order to improve CFD predictions, and to consider CFD as a clinical diagnostic or treatment planning tool, there is a need to ensure its accuracy and reliability through a systematic approach ...
متن کاملThe use of shear stress for targeted drug delivery.
Stenosed segments of arteries significantly alter the blood flow known from healthy vessels. In particular, the wall shear stress at critically stenosed arteries is at least an order of magnitude higher than in healthy situations. This alteration represents a change in physical force and might be used as a trigger signal for drug delivery. Mechano-sensitive drug delivery systems that preferenti...
