چکیده

We discuss a simple and experimentally realizable model for creation of enhanced Kerr nonlinearities accompanied by vanishing absorption. The model involves a V -type atom subjected to a strong drive laser, a weak probe laser and coupled to a single-mode cavity field. Working in the bad-cavity limit, we find that the simultaneous coupling of the cavity field to both atomic transitions creates a coherence between the transitions and thus can lead to quantum interference effects. We investigate the influences of the cavity field frequency, the cavity field-atom coupling constants and the atomic decay constants on the linear and the third-order (Kerr) nonlinear susceptibilities. We predict giant Kerr nonlinearities with vanishing absorption and attribute this effect to the combination of the Purcell effect and the cavity-induced quantum interference. 5 v 1 1 F eb 1 99 9 Quantum limit of photon - photon interactions using electromagnetically induced transparency

Quantum limit of dissipation-free photon-photon interactions at the few photon level is studied in the context of giant Kerr nonlinearities in cavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). It is shown that photon-photon interaction is largest when the cavity contains a single atom. In contrast to conventional nonlinearities, increasing the number of atoms cannot increase the interactio...

A Treatment of the Absorption Spectrum for a Multiphoton V-Type Three-Level Atom Interacting with a Squeezed Coherent Field in the Presence of Nonlinearities

We study the interaction of a three-level atom with a single mode field through multiphoton transition in a cavity, taking explicitly into account the existence of forms of nonlinearities of both the field and the intensity-dependent atom-field coupling. The analytical forms of the absorption spectrum is calculated using the dressed states of the system. The effects of photon multiplicities, me...

Light-shift-induced photonic nonlinearities

We propose a new method to produce selfand cross-Kerr photonic nonlinearities, using light-induced Stark shifts due to the interaction of a cavity mode with atoms. The proposed experimental set-up is simpler than in previous approaches, while the strength of the nonlinearity obtained with a single atom is the same as in the setting based on electromagnetically induced transparency. Furthermore ...

A Bootstrapping Approach for Generating Maximally Path-Entangled Photon States

We propose a bootstrapping approach to generation of maximally path-entangled states of photons, so called “NOON states”, achievable within the current experimental technology. Strong atom-light interaction of cavity QED can be employed to generate NOON states with about 100 photons; which can then be used to boost the existing experimental Kerr nonlinearities based on quantum coherence effects...

Dispersive properties and large Kerr nonlinearities using dipole-induced transparency in a single-sided cavity

We calculate the dispersive properties of a single-sided cavity coupled to a single dipole. We show that when a field is resonant with the dipole and the Purcell factor exceeds the bare cavity reflection coefficient, the field experiences a phase shift relative to reflection from a bare cavity. We then show that optically Stark shifting the dipole resonance with a second field creates large Ker...
