Complex lapse, complex action, and path integrals.

چکیده

Abstract. Imaginary time is often used in quantum tunnelling calculations. This article advocates a conceptually sounder alternative: complex lapse. In the “3+1” action for the Einstein gravitational field minimally coupled to a Klein-Gordon field, allowing the lapse function to be complex yields a complex action which generates both the usual Lorentzian theory and its Riemannian analogue, and in particular allows a change of signature between the two. The action and variational equations are manifestly well defined in the Hamiltonian representation, with the momentum fields consequently being complex. The complex action interpolates between the Lorentzian and Riemannian actions as they appear formally in the respective path integrals. Thus the complex-lapse theory provides a unified basis for a path-integral quantum theory of gravity involving both Lorentzian and Riemannian aspects. A major motivation is the quantum-tunnelling scenario for the origin of the universe. Taken as an explanation for the observed quantum tunnelling of particles, the complex-lapse theory determines that the argument of the lapse for the universe now is extremely small but negative.

Vertex Decomposable Simplicial Complexes Associated to Path Graphs

Introduction Vertex decomposability of a simplicial complex is a combinatorial topological concept which is related to the algebraic properties of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the simplicial complex. This notion was first defined by Provan and Billera in 1980 for k-decomposable pure complexes which is known as vertex decomposable when . Later Bjorner and Wachs extended this concept to non-pure ...

Toward Picard-Lefschetz Theory of Path Integrals, Complex Saddles and Resurgence

We show that the semi-classical analysis of generic Euclidean path integrals necessarily requires complexification of the action and measure, and consideration of complex saddle solutions. We demonstrate that complex saddle points have a natural interpretation in terms of the Picard-Lefschetz theory. Motivated in part by the semi-classical expansion of QCD with adjoint matter on R × S, we study...

Path integral derivations of novel complex trajectory methods

Path integral derivations are presented for two recently developed complex trajectory techniques for the propagation of wave packets, Complex WKB and BOMCA. Complex WKB is derived using a standard saddle point approximation of the path integral, but taking into account the h̄ dependence of both the amplitude and the phase of the intial wave function, thus giving rise to the need for complex clas...

3 New solvable Matrix Integrals

We generalize the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber and certain other integrals (Gross-Witten integral and integrals over complex matrices) using the notion of tau function of matrix argument. In this case one can reduce multi-matrix integrals to the integral over eigenvalues, which in turn is a certain tau function. We also consider a generalization of the Kontsevich integral.
