چکیده

E lasticity is the property that enables a fluid or solid body to resist change in size and shape when an external force is applied and to return to its original size and shape when the force is removed. This concept is a major building block in seismology because it is the elastic properties of rocks which allow seismic waves to propagate through the earth. The theory of elasticity is one of the major achievements of classical physics. Its architects include many of the colossal scientific figures of the 17th, 18th and 18th centuries, among whom are Robert Hooke, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, James Bernoulli and his nephew Daniel Bernoulli, Leonhard Euler, Thomas Young, Charles Augustin Coulomb, Augustin Louis Cauchy, Claude Louis Marie Navier, Simeon Denis Poisson and George Gabriel Stokes. The framework, which they and others constructed to quantify and analyze elasticity, derives from the basic concepts of classical mechanics known as stress and strain and the mathematical linkage known as Hooke’s Law. Stresses are forces per unit area that are transmitted through a material, i.e., forces exerted by one part of a body on a neigbboring part. Stresses that act perpendicularly to a surface are

Free Vibration Analysis of Microtubules as Orthotropic Elastic Shells Using Stress and Strain Gradient Elasticity Theory

In this paper, vibration of the protein microtubule, one of the most important intracellular elements serving as one of the common components among nanotechnology, biotechnology and mechanics, is investigated using stress and strain gradient elasticity theory and orthotropic elastic shells model. Microtubules in the cell are influenced by internal and external stimulation and play a part in con...

Axial and Torsional Free Vibrations of Elastic Nano-Beams by Stress-Driven Two-Phase Elasticity

Size-dependent longitudinal and torsional vibrations of nano-beams are examined by two-phase mixture integral elasticity. A new and efficient elastodynamic model is conceived by convexly combining the local phase with strain- and stress-driven purely nonlocal phases. The proposed stress-driven nonlocal integral mixture leads to well-posed structural problems for any value of the scale parameter...

Elasticity: Cartesian fields of dilatation: BASIC SEISMOLOGY 5

T hroughout history there has always been a struggle in the human mind between the discrete and the continuous. This difference in viewpoint climaxed in the 17th century because of a fundamental conflict in the cosmologies of Descartes and Newton. The 17th century was arguably the century of scientific genius: Kepler, Napier, Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Fermat, Pascal, Huygens, Hooke, Boyle, Lee...

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of FGM Pressure Vessel Reinforced by Laminated Composite Materials

In this research, the analytical and numerical investigation of a cylindrical shell made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) reinforced by laminated composite subjected to internal pressure is presented. Using the infinitesimal theory of elasticity, the analytical solution of stress and strain in vessels made of FGMs is studied first. It is assumed that the elasticity modulus follows a powe...
