چکیده

The problem of a uniform transverse flow past a prolate spheroid of arbitrary aspect ratio a t low Reynolds numbers has been analysed by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The solution is found to depend on two Reynolds numbers, one based on the semi-minor axis b, Rb = Ublv, and the other on the semi-major axis a, Ra = Ualv (U being the free-stream velocity at infinity, which is perpendicular to the major axis of the spheroid, and v the kinematic viscosity of the fluid). A drag formula is obtained for small values of R, and arbitrary values of R,. When Ra is also small, the present drag formula reduces to the Obcrbeck (1876) result for Stokes flow past a spheroid, and it gives the Oseen (1910) drag for an infinitely long cylinder when Ra tends to infinity. This result thus provides a clear physical picture and explanation of the 'Stokes paradox' known in viscous flow theory.

Analysis of Flow Pattern with Low Reynolds Number around Different Shapes of Bridge Piers, and Determination of Hydrodynamic Forces, using Open Foam Software

In many cases, a set of obstacles, such as bridge piers and abutments, are located in the river waterway. Bridge piers disrupt river’s normal flow, and the created turbulence and disturbance causes diversion of flow lines and creates rotational flow. Geometric shape and position of the piers with respect to flow direction and also number of piers and their spacing are effective on changing the ...

Three Dimensional Analysis of Flow Past a Solid-Sphere at Low Reynolds Numbers with the Aid of Body Fitted Coordinates

In this paper, the flow-field of an incompressible viscous flow past a solid-sphere at low Reynolds numbers (up to 270) is investigated numerically. In order to extend the capabilities of the finite volume method, the boundary (body) fitted coordinates (BFC) method is used. Transformation of the partial differential equations to algebraic relations is based on the finite-volume method with coll...

Fully-resolved LES of weakly separated flows

A high-accuracy large eddy simulation (LES) is applied to ows over a sphere and an underwater vehicle. Both objects have relatively weak separated stern ows that may depend upon the accurate resolution of turbulence structures in the attached ow regions upstream of the separation point. For the sphere we compute ows over a range of Reynolds numbers from subto super-critical (Re = 1 10 to Re = 1...

Hydromechanics of low - Reynolds - number flow . Part 5 . Motion of a slender torus

In order to elucidate the general Stokes flow characteristics present for slender bodies of finite centre-line curvature the singularity method for Stokesflow has been employed to construct solutions to the flow past a slender torus. The symmetry of the geometry and absence of ends has made a highly accurate analysis possible. The no-slip boundary condition on the body surface is satisfied up t...
