Lithological and Mineralogical Investigation of the Surface of Mars

چکیده
Results are presented of a continued investigation of the infrared colorimetry of the Martian bright and dark areas. Laboratory comparisons indicate that the infrared color profile of the Martian deserts matches that of a naturally occurring limonite stain which forms and is preserved on igneous rocks in a terrestrial desert environment. The co]orimetry of the Martian dark regions is compared to that of fresh basalt samples and volcanic ash and is found to be greatly discordant.

Source apportionment of the sediments entering dam using lithological and mineralogical studies
The present study was carried out to determine the possible origins of sediments entering Taleghan Dam in northern part of Iran, in order to avoid further sedimentation and helping in extension of the useful life of the proposed dam. This was performed by XRD analysis. To do so, first of all, sediment sampling points were positioned along the Taleghan River. The collected samples, after coding,...
متن کاملMineralogical biosignatures and the search for life on Mars.
If life ever existed, or still exists, on Mars, its record is likely to be found in minerals formed by, or in association with, microorganisms. An important concept regarding interpretation of the mineralogical record for evidence of life is that, broadly defined, life perturbs disequilibria that arise due to kinetic barriers and can impart unexpected structure to an abiotic system. Many featur...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Density Dependent Dielectric Properties of Mars-like Soils: Implications for Mars Radar Studies;
Introduction: Mars is the subject of several present and future radar investigations over the frequency range 1 MHz to 1GHz investigating the physical properties of the Martian surface and subsurface. A primary objective of the ESA orbital sounding radars, MARSIS (0.5-5 MHz) and SHARAD (15-25 MHz) is to map the Martian subsurface looking for evidence of subsurface water. The scientific return f...
متن کاملMars History Derived from the Mineralogical Data of Omega/mex Acquired during the First Martian Year of Operation
Introduction: The pionneering Mariner and Viking optical mappings have revealed that Mars underwent an intense and active evolution, with tectonic, volcanic, water-driven and erosion processes that left record in a variety of surface structures. At the same time, they showed that Mars did not suffered a global surface reset, as it preserved areas dating from the early heavy bombardment. Major q...
متن کاملMineralogical Assessment of Volcanic Edifices on Mars Using Near- and Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing
Introduction: Many of the largest volcanoes on Mars are located in high-albedo regions. These regions are spectrally bright due to mantling by surface dust, which masks the absorption features used to infer mineralogy in both the nearand thermal infrared [1-3]. As a result, the classical martian bright regions of Arabia Terra, Elysium Planitia, and Tharsis remain uncharacterized in detail with ...
