Aerial Survey Techniques for Breeding Whooping Cranes
نویسنده
چکیده
Since the discovery of nesting whooping cranes in Wood Buffalo National Park, the Canadian Wildlife Service has conducted aerial surveys to monitor the population. Aerial survey techniques have varied over the years; however, they have generally followed the techniques used by the author since 1991. The technique involves flying a combination of circular flights and transects over known nesting territories and similar looking marshes likely to contain breeding whooping cranes. These aerial surveys account for nearly 100% of the breeding whooping cranes each year. PROCEEDINGS OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CRANE WORKSHOP 11:83-88

Natural Fertility in Whooping Cranes and Mississippi Sandhill Cranes at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center
The first fertile whooping crane (Grus americana; WC) egg produced through natural breeding at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (patuxent) was laid in 1991. Prior to that time, all fertile whooping crane eggs were the result of artificial insemination. Since 1991, eight different whooping crane pairs at Patuxent have produced fertile eggs through natural breeding. Mean fertility averages over ...
متن کاملAre whooping cranes destined for extinction? Climate change imperils recruitment and population growth
Identifying climatic drivers of an animal population's vital rates and locating where they operate steers conservation efforts to optimize species recovery. The population growth of endangered whooping cranes (Grus americana) hinges on juvenile recruitment. Therefore, we identify climatic drivers (solar activity [sunspots] and weather) of whooping crane recruitment throughout the species' life ...

متن کاملWhooping crane recruitment enhanced by egg removal
To facilitate recovery through captive breeding and foster-parenting programs of the endangered whooping crane, one of two eggs was removed from 62% of nests in Wood Buffalo National Park during 1967–1996. Egg removals were justified because cranes usually rear a single chick; the other dies to siblicide or predation. Concerns exist that the wild population might have recovered even faster if n...
متن کاملHaemosporida prevalence and diversity are similar in endangered wild whooping cranes (Grus americana) and sympatric sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis)
The population growth of endangered whooping cranes (Grus americana) is not consistent with species recovery goals, and the impact of parasite infection on whooping crane populations is largely unknown. Disease ecology and epidemiology research of endangered species is often hindered by limited ability to conduct invasive sampling on the target taxa. Accordingly, we hypothesized that sandhill c...
