Multiscale Modelling of the Respiratory Track : a Theoretical Framework

چکیده
Abstract. We propose here a decomposition of the respiratory tree into three stages which correspond to different mechanical models. The resulting system is described by the Navier-Stokes equation coupled with an ODE (a simple spring model) representing the motion of the diaphragm muscl. We prove that this problem has at least one solution locally in time for any data and, in the special case where the external forces are equal to zero and if the initial conditions are small enough, that the solution exists globally in time. Note moreover that, in the case where the spring stiffness is equal to zero, we obtain an existence result globally in time provided, once again, that the data are small enough. The behaviour of the global model is illustrated by two-dimensional simulations.

متن کاملApplication of M3GM in a Petroleum Reservoir Simulation
Reservoir formations exhibit a wide range of heterogeneity from micro to macro scales. A simulation that involves all of these data is highly time consuming or almost impossible; hence, a new method is needed to meet the computational cost. Moreover, the deformations of the reservoir are important not only to protect the uppermost equipment but also to simulate fluid pattern and petroleum produ...
متن کاملA Study to Predict the Development of Wear for the Wheel/interface of a Railway Track
The train transport is often confronted with greatly repeated changes in scope, vehicle travel well-being and transport safety because of the adjustments of wheel and rail profiles. These problems are frustrating and threatening. Thus, there is a requirement for an approach to predicting the wear of wheel/rail to tackle these problems. A new theoretical ground is broken through the build-up a m...
متن کاملMultiscale Evaluation of the Nonlinear Elastic Properties of Carbon Nanotubes Under Finite Deformation
This paper deals with the calculation of the elastic properties for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under axial deformation and hydrostatic pressure using the atomistic-based continuum approach and the deformation mapping technique. A hyperelastic model based on the higher-order Cauchy-Born (HCB) rule being applicable at finite strains and accounting for the chirality and material nonli...
متن کاملTowards computer-aided multiscale modelling: An overarching methodology and support of conceptual modelling
Multiscale modelling is now widely regarded as a promising and powerful tool in various disciplines, including the broad area of process engineering. However, a multiscale model is usually much more difficult to develop than a single-scale model due to a range of conceptual, numerical, and software challenges. Currently, there is little support developed to facilitate multiscale modelling. This...
