چکیده

In each of seven fully controlled experiments, potted California, U.S. coast live oak trees were artificially inoculated with Phytophthora ramorum, the agent of a tree disease commonly referred to as sudden oak death. Phosphites were applied to trees using a range of application approaches either as preventive or therapeutic treatments. Soil drenches and bark application of phosphites were ineffective; foliar application of phosphites amended with surfactants were effective only at times and always caused phytotoxicity. On the other hand, injections of phosphites and bark applications of phosphites + the organosilicate surfactant PentrabarkTM (Agrichem, Medina, OH, U.S.) were consistently effective in suppressing bark colonization by this pathogen without causing phytotoxicity. This is the first study describing the use of a chemical treatment amended with an organosilicate surfactant for topical bark applications.

Disease Risk Factors and Disease Progress in Coast Live Oak and Tanoak Affected by Phytophthora ramorum Canker

This paper reports on five years of observations in a case-control study examining the role of tree and site factors on the development of Phytophthora ramorum stem canker (sudden oak death) in coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) and tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus). In September of each year from 2000 through 2004, we collected data on P. ramorum symptoms, tree condition, midday stem water pote...

Sudden Oak Death, a New Forest Disease in California

A forest disease caused by a newly described pathogen, Phytophthora ramorum, is presently affecting a number of woody plant species in central and northern coastal California and southern Oregon, U.S.A. Among the most severely affected tree species are coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, and tanoak, Lithocarpus densiflorus. In March 2000, we established plots in Marin County, CA, to assess sympt...

WebGIS for Monitoring "Sudden Oak Death" in coastal California

Tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus), coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), black oak (Q. kelloggii), and some shreve oak (Q. parvula var. shreve) trees in coastal California are affected by a new disease called ‘‘Sudden Oak Death.’’ These tree communities are extremely important for habitat provision, recreation, and aesthetics. Research of and community interest in this new disease is very high. We...

The Dynamic Response of Housing Values to a Forest Invasive Disease: Evidence from a Sudden Oak Death Infestation

Sudden Oak Death” (Phytophthora ramorum) is a non-indigenous forest pathogen which causes substantial mortality of coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) and several other oak tree species on the Pacific Coast of the United States. We estimated the time path of residential property values subject to oak mortality using a dataset that spans more than two decades—including a decade of transactions be...

Introgression among California Black Oaks—Dodd, Kashani, and A.-Rafii Population Diversity and Evidence of Introgression Among the Black Oaks of California

The black oaks of California include 4 tree species (California black oak, coast live oak, Shreve oak, interior live oak) that are known to hybridize. Complex patterns of population variation within each species are likely to result from these hybrid combinations and from subsequent introgressions. We have been studying population variation using biochemical and molecular markers and report res...
