چکیده

The spectra measured by SCIAMACHY contain information on a number of important atmospheric trace gases. The near-infrared nadir spectra enable the retrieval of total column amounts of CO, H2O, CH4, CO2, and N2O. We are developing a modified DOAS algorithm (WFM-DOAS) to accomplish this task. Here we give an overview about the current status of this activity (using WFM-DOAS Version 0.4). We show that encouraging higher level data products can be obtained despite the preliminary calibration of the operational spectra. For example, accurate water vapour columns can been retrieved over ocean and land, plumes of CO can be detected, the relatively small (few percent) interhemispheric difference of the methane mixing ratio is visible in single day data, and there are strong indications that for the first time a CO2 source/sink region has been identified from space. We highlight a number of issues that need further study and, if solved, are expected to result in improved data products.

Shipborne solar absorption measurements of CO2, CH4, N2O and CO and comparison with SCIAMACHY WFM-DOAS retrievals

CO, CH4, N2O and CO2 were retrieved from high resolution solar absorption spectra obtained during a ship cruise from Capetown to Bremerhaven in January/February 2003 by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Precisions of better than 0.5% for the column averaged volume mixing ratios (VMR) of CH4 and CO2 are achieved using of O2 as a reference gas. Shipborne FTIR-measurements of CO and ...

Retrieval of CO from SCIAMACHY onboard ENVISAT: detection of strongly polluted areas and seasonal patterns in global CO abundances

SCIAMACHY onboard the European environmental research satellite ENVISAT is an UV/visible/nearinfrared spectrometer providing 3 near infrared channels covering wavelengths from 1–1.75μm, 1.94–2.04μm and 2.26– 2.38μm with moderate spectral resolution (0.22–1.5 nm). From their structured absorption in these spectral regions, we can quantitatively determine the total column densities of the greenho...

Atmospheric carbon gases retrieved from SCIAMACHY by WFM-DOAS: version 0.5 CO and CH4 and impact of calibration improvements on CO2 retrieval

The three carbon gases carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) are important atmospheric constituents affecting air quality and climate. The near-infrared nadir spectra measured by SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT contain information on the vertical columns of these gases which we retrieve using a modified DOAS algorithm (WFM-DOAS or WFMD). Our main data products are CO vertical colum...

Verification of Sciamachy Level 1 and 2 Near-ir Nadir Data Products by Wfm–doas Analysis

Initial results are presented concerning the verification of operational SCIAMACHY near–infrared (NIR) Level 1 nadir radiance spectra and corresponding Level 2 near–realtime (NRT) BIAS data products such as CH4, CO, and H2O total column amounts. The focus of this study is channel 8 (2265–2380 nm). The verification approach used here is based on applying an independent retrieval method (WFM–DOAS...

Comparisons between SCIAMACHY and ground-based FTIR data for total columns of CO, CH4, CO2 and N2O

Total column amounts of CO, CH4, CO2 and N2O retrieved from SCIAMACHY nadir observations in its near-infrared channels have been compared to data from a ground-based quasi-global network of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. The SCIAMACHY data considered here have been produced by three different retrieval algorithms, WFM-DOAS (version 0.5 for CO and CH4 and version 0.4 for CO2 an...
