چکیده

ALTHOUGH THE BLALOCK-TAUSSIG SHUNT has been performed since 1945,1 the long-term effects upon the pulmonary vascular bed have been recorded only incompletely. While pulmonary vascular disease following the Waterston or Potts operations has been reported to occur in from 10 to 50% of cases, its incidence after the BlalockTaussig shunt has been thought to be much lower. Daoud,2 Hancock," and Roberts4 and their associates have reported cases with hypertensive pulmonary vascular disease as a consequence of the Blalock-Taussig anastomosis. Ross and associates" found only 11 cases of pulmonary vascular disease following the Blalock-Taussig operation performed in 224 cases. This communication presents the histologic findings of the pulmonary arterial system in patients following the BlalockTaussig shunt operation. Histologic findings were correlated with the duration of the shunt and the cause of death.

Pulmonary vascular disease complicating the Blalock-Taussig anastomosis.

The pulmonary vascular bed was evaluated following a Blalock-Taussig shunt performed in 36 patients for decreased pulmonary blood flow. The time of follow-up ranged from one to 21 years after operation. No patients developed severe pulmonary changes in less than eight years after institution of the shunt. Ten of 20 patients having a shunt eight years or longer developed some degree of pulmonary...

Perigraft seroma complicating the modified Blalock-Taussig shunts: two consecutive instances with review of literature.

Systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (modified Blalock-Taussig shunt) are being used successfully in palliation of cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Graft thrombosis is by far the most common complication of the procedure. Persistant serum leakage through PTFE graft causing perigraft seroma is a rare but devastating complication resulting in increased durat...

Short Communications Vertebrobasilar Ischemia After Total Repair of Tetralogy of Fallot: Significance of Subclavian Steal Created by Blalock-Taussig Anastomosis Vertebrobasilar Ischemia After Correction of Tetralogy of Fallot

Patients who have undergone a Blalock-Taussig anastomosis for treatment of congenital heart disease may have the vascular anatomy of the subclavian steal syndrome. Cerebral ischemia has been reported in such patients, but not when total surgical correction has eliminated other predisposing factors. We report a patient who developed vertebrobasilar insufficiency 31 years after Blalock-Taussig an...

Pseudoaneurysm following modified Blalock Taussig shunt.

The modified Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt is a common palliative procedure for congenital cyanotic heart disease (CHD) with diminished pulmonary blood flow(1). In developing countries, definitive surgery usually gets delayed due to limited resources and expertise(2). Children with cyanotic CHD and BT shunt often present to the pediatrician resulting in some of the complications of BT shunt being ...
