A New Approach for the Permanent Disposal of Long Lived Fission Waste

چکیده
Nuclear fission is capable of meeting global needs for carbon-free energy for millennia. However, the siting and implementation of waste repositories for spent fuel is becoming increasingly problematic from a financial and political perspective. We have performed initial studies of a novel concept for the permanent disposal of longlived fission waste, where “permanent” is defined as being on the billion-year time scale. The concept employs the heat from a compact, high-power-density fission reactor to melt a self-sealing channel, tens of kilometers down into the continental lithosphere. Partitioned long-lived fission waste is packaged at the rear of the device that melts its way through the rock at a descent rate set by the achievable reactor power density. The waste would be irretrievable and cannot return to the biosphere. Monitoring and longterm integrity of waste containers would not be required and disposal costs should be <1% of the cost-of-electricity. Design concepts for the reactor and the principle of molten rock boring are based on existing experimental and operational data. Reactor core – UN, UO2,... ≤20% enriched

Concepts of Accelerator Based Transmutation Systems
The search for an optimum strategy of rad-waste disposal is an extremely complex task depending on economic parameters and long tenrI hazard estimates for which public consent still has to be achieved. Among the different options attention focuses on the possibilities of transmuting radio-nuclei such as minor actinides and long lived fission products by neutrons generated in spallation processe...
متن کاملLong-term Radioactive Waste from Fusion Reactors: Part Ii
In Part I we calculated 10 CFR 61 "Class-C" specific activity limits for all long-lived radionuclides with atomic number less than 88 (Ra). These calculations were based on the whole-body dose. We also estimated the production of these radionuclides from all naturally occurring elements with atomic numbers less than 84 (Po) in the first wall of a typical fusion reactor, and thereby derived conc...

This paper describes the general system for regulation of disposal of solid, long-lived radioactive wastes. It outlines the relevant Government policy, the framework of legislation and arrangements for implementation, the associated guidance produced by regulatory bodies and the approach to assessment by regulators of a safety case for radioactive waste disposal. Also, for the purposes of discu...

Today, during the life of an open pit mine, million tons of materials, including waste and ore, are displacing by truck fleets. In the case of a shallow ore deposit, which is located up to 300 meters to the ground surface, depending on preliminary equipment size and capacity, it will take three to five years to remove overburden and waste rocks to expose the ore body. In that period, the main w...
متن کاملThe Regulatory Perspective: Role of Regulatory Review of the Safety Case and Feedback to Site Investigation
Swiss Legislation requires for all types of radioactive waste the safe and permanent disposal in deep geological repositories within Switzerland by stipulating a step-by-step procedure for site selection and licensing of the disposal facilities. Each step requires safety considerations or safety analyses which are reviewed by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate. The principle steps of...
