The nature of SN 1997D: low-mass progenitor and weak explosion

چکیده
We analyzed the spectra and light curve of the peculiar type II-P supernova 1997D to recover ejecta parameters. The optimal hydrodynamical model of SN 1997D, which meets observational constraints at the photospheric epoch, suggests a low explosion energy of about 1050 erg, ejecta mass around 6M , and presupernova radius near 85R . We confirm the previous result by Turatto et al. (1998) that the ejecta contain a very low amount of radioactive 56Ni (≈ 0.002M ). Modelling the nebular spectrum supports the hydrodynamical model and permits us to estimate the mass of freshly synthesized oxygen (0.02–0.07 M ). Combined with the basic results of stellar evolution theory the obtained parameters of SN 1997D imply that the progenitor was a star from the 8–12 M mass range at the main sequence. The fact that at least some progenitors from this mass range give rise to core-collapse supernovae with a low kinetic energy (≈ 1050 erg) and low amount of radioactive 56Ni (≈ 0.002M ) has no precedent and imposes important constraints on the explosion mechanism. We speculate that the galactic supernovae 1054 and 1181 could be attributed to SN 1997D-like events.

The fading of SN 1997 D ⋆
We present a new set of spectroscopic and photometric data extending the observations of SN 1997D to over 400 days after the explosion. These observations confirm the peculiar properties of SN 1997D, such as the very low abundance of Co (0.002 M⊙) and the low expansion velocity of the ejecta (∼ 1000 km s ). We discuss the implications of these observations for the character of the progenitor an...

The progenitor of the Type IIP supernova (SN) 2008bk was discovered in pre-explosion g′r′i′IYJHKs images, acquired with European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph, High Acuity Wide field K-band Imager and Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera instruments and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph-South instrument. The wealth of pre-explosion ...
متن کاملWill a Black Hole Soon Emerge from SN 1997 D ?
Observations combined with theoretical modeling of the light curve of the recently discovered supernova 1997D in NGC 1536 suggest that it might host a black hole formed in the aftermath of the explosion. We consider some observable consequences of a black hole in SN 1997D and estimate the late–time accretion luminosity of the material which falls back onto the hole. We find that this luminosity...
متن کاملTHE DOUBLE PEAKED SN2013ge: A TYPE Ib/c SN WITH AN EARLY ASYMMETRIC MASS EJECTION OR AN EXTENDED PROGENITOR ENVELOPE
We present extensive multiwavelength (radio to X-ray) observations of the Type Ib/c SN2013ge from −13 to +457 days relative to maximum light, including a series of optical spectra and Swift UV-optical photometry beginning 2 − 4 days post explosion. This makes SN 2013ge one of the best observed normal Type Ib/c SN at early times, when the light curve is particularly sensitive to the progenitor c...
متن کاملPeculiar , Low Luminosity Type II Supernovae : Low Energy Explosions in Massive Progenitors ?
A number of supernovae, classified as Type II, show remarkably peculiar properties such as an extremely low expansion velocity and an extraordinarily small amount of Ni in the ejecta. We present a joint analysis of the available observations for two of these peculiar Type II supernovae, SN 1997D and SN 1999br, using a comprehensive semi-analytic method that can reproduce the light curve and the...
