A model for the resistivity structure of LNAPL plumes and their environs in sandy sediments

چکیده

Geophysical site characterization investigations at fuel spill sites have been generally guided by a working hypothesis Ž . which assumes that the light non-aqueous phase liquids LNAPL are a fully saturating phase of intrinsically very high electrical resistivity. Using observations from other related sciences, and contrary geophysical observations, a different model is developed which treats these spills as dynamic, changing systems dominated by surprisingly low resistivities. The major geophysical response of a mature or established spill of this type is due to an anomalously low resistivity zone in the Ž . lower vadose zone and upper portion of the aquifer. This zone is produced by a high total dissolved solids TDS leachate which is aperiodically flushed down from the volume of intimately mixed hydrocarbon, water, oxygen and soil near the base of the vadose zone where microbial activity is a maximum. This leachate is a result of acidification by organic and carbonic acids of the water-filled capillaries in the heterogeneous mixing zone at the freerresidual product level, and is produced by the leaching and etching of the native mineral grains and grain coatings. This conductive inorganic plume is generally coincident with the uppermost part of the anaerobic dissolved hydrocarbon plume as defined by hydrochemical studies, but is thin and most concentrated at the top of the aquifer. It has been best detected and mapped by virtue of the amplitude Ž . shadow it causes on ground penetrating radar GPR profiles, and more recently by direct measurement using vertical Ž . resistivity probes VRP with readings every 5.08 cm from the surface to more than 7.5 m in depth. Other surface electrical Ž Ž . . geophysical methods VES, electromagnetic method EM , and multi-spaced horizontal resistivity profiling can define this zone only if conditions are optimal. The conductive zone has been known for some years by hydrochemists and hydrogeologists, especially at sites where water samples are collected from short screens at multi-level wells. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. In-situ apparent conductivity measurements and microbial population distribution at a hydrocarbon-contaminated site

We investigated the bulk electrical conductivity and microbial population distribution in sediments at a site contaminated with light nonaqueous-phase liquid (LNAPL). The bulk conductivity was measured using in-situ vertical resistivity probes; the most probable num ber method was used to characterize the spatial distri bution of aerobic heterotrophic and oil-degrading mi crobial populations...

Approximate resistivity and susceptibility mapping from airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data, a case study for a geologically plausible porphyry copper unit in Iran

This paper describes the application of approximate methods to invert airborne magnetic data as well as helicopter-borne frequency domain electromagnetic data in order to retrieve a joint model of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. The study area located in Semnan province of Iran consists of an arc-shaped porphyry andesite covered by sedimentary units which may have potential ...

Integration of sedimentology and geoelectrical studies in Quaternary deposits in western and eastern coastal areas of southern part of Lake Urmia

Extended Abstract 1-Introduction Interdisciplinary studies play an important role in answering engineering questions. Identifying the characteristics of alluviums, underground water exploration and minerals, along with geotechnical studies in the construction of heavy structures are just some of these applications. Following the increasing drying of Lake Urmia, various research has been conduc...

Grain size and mineralogical studies of sandy sediments in southwestern Iran

The objectives of this study were to determine the nature (aeolian vs. alluvial) and origin of sandy sediments in southwestern Iran (Khuzestan province) were collected in two transects across (NW-SE directions) and perpendicular to the Karkheh River, by using grain sized distribution characteristics, and the mineralogy and micro-texture of quartz grains of forty-five surface samples (0-30cm) at...

Facies analysis, sedimentary environment and geochemistry of core sediments from the southern Coast of Caspian Sea, Mazandaran Province, Iran

1- Introduction The sediment cores BAG, AZD and AM in the Babolsar, Jouybar and Zaghmarz areas are located at the southern Iranian part of the coastal plain of the Caspian Sea. These areas are contained by major mountain ridge, the Alborz in the south (Central Alborz Structural Zone). The Alborz Mountain represent the main source of terrigenous materials in the South basin of the Caspian Sea. ...
