چکیده

[1] Seismic reflection profiles shot across the Cascadia forearc show that a 5–15 km thick band of reflections, previously interpreted as a lower crustal shear zone above the subducting Juan de Fuca plate, extends into the upper mantle of the North American plate, reaching depths of at least 50 km. In the extreme western corner of the mantle wedge, these reflectors occur in rocks with P wave velocities of 6750–7000 ms . Elsewhere, the forearc mantle, which is probably partially serpentinized, exhibits velocities of approximately 7500 ms . The rocks with velocities of 6750–7000 ms 1 are anomalous with respect to the surrounding mantle, and may represent either: (1) locally high mantle serpentinization, (2) oceanic crust trapped by backstepping of the subduction zone, or (3) rocks from the lower continental crust that have been transported into the uppermost mantle by subduction erosion. The association of subparallel seismic reflectors with these anomalously low velocities favours the tectonic emplacement of crustal rocks.

Mantle hydration and Cl-rich fluids in the subduction forearc

In the forearc region, aqueous fluids are released from the subducting slab at a rate depending on its thermal state. Escaping fluids tend to rise vertically unless they meet permeability barriers such as the deformed plate interface or the Moho of the overriding plate. Channeling of fluids along the plate interface and Moho may result in fluid overpressure in the oceanic crust, precipitation o...

Theoretical mineralogy, density, seismic wavespeeds and H2O content of the Cascadia subduction zone, with implications for intermediate-depth seismicity and earthquake hazard

We calculate physical properties of rocks in subduction zones using a compilation of mineral physical property measurements, a new set of phase diagrams and subduction-zone thermal models, and apply our results to Cascadia. Observed P-wave speeds of the Juan de Fuca plate west of the Cascadia trench are best matched by a greenschist-facies upper crust and metastable, partially hydrated lower cr...

Tectonic wedging along the rear of the offshore Taiwan accretionary prism

The structural geometry, kinematics and density structure along the rear of the offshore Taiwan accretionary prism were studied using seismic reflection profiling and gravity modeling. Deformation between the offshore prism and forearc basin at the point of incipient collision, and southward into the region of subduction, has been interpreted as a tectonic wedge, similar to those observed along...

Late Cretaceous cooling of the east-central Peninsular Ranges batholith (33°N): Relationship to La Posta pluton emplacement, Laramide shallow subduction, and forearc sedimentation

Biotite and K-feldspar Ar/Ar systems from the east-central Peninsular Ranges batholith near 33°N were affected by two distinct phases of Late Cretaceous rapid cooling. The 85-Ma biotite K-Ar isochron separates comparatively shallow rocks in the southwest that record earlier cooling (91–86 Ma) from deeper rocks in the northeast that record later cooling (78–68 Ma). Samples close to 85 Ma isochro...
