چکیده

A Concealed Information Test (CIT) investigates differential physiological responses to deed-related ("probe") vs. irrelevant items. The present study focused on the detection of concealed information using simultaneous recordings of autonomic and brain electrical measures. As a secondary issue, verbal and pictorial presentation were compared with respect to their influence on the recorded measures. Thirty-one participants underwent a mock-crime scenario with a combined verbal and pictorial presentation of nine items. The subsequent CIT, designed with respect to event-related potential (ERP) measurement, used a 3-3.5 second interstimulus interval. The item presentation modality, i.e. pictures or written words, was varied between subjects; no response was required from the participants. In addition to electroencephalogram (EEG), electrodermal activity (EDA), electrocardiogram (ECG), respiratory activity, and finger plethysmogram were recorded. A significant probe-vs.-irrelevant effect was found for each of the measures. Compared to sole ERP measurement, the combination of ERP and EDA yielded incremental information for detecting concealed information. Although, EDA per se did not reach the predictive value known from studies primarily designed for peripheral physiological measurement. Presentation modality neither influenced the detection accuracy for autonomic measures nor EEG measures; this underpins the equivalence of verbal and pictorial item presentation in a CIT, regardless of the physiological measures recorded. Future studies should further clarify whether the incremental validity observed in the present study reflects a differential sensitivity of ERP and EDA to different subprocesses in a CIT.

ENCODING AND QUESTIONING IN A CIT 1 Running head: ENCODING AND QUESTIONING IN A CIT Physiological responses in a Concealed Information Test are determined interactively by encoding procedure and questioning format

Physiological responses in the Concealed Information Test (CIT) are known to depend on the depth of encoding critical items; CIT questions commonly refer to knowledge about critical items. It is unclear to what extent (1) different modes of item handling in a mock-crime, and (2) alternative questioning formats, e.g. asking about participants’ particular actions with the critical items, influenc...

Fuzzy particle swarm optimization with nearest-better neighborhood for multimodal optimization

In the last decades, many efforts have been made to solve multimodal optimization problems using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). To produce good results, these PSO algorithms need to specify some niching parameters to define the local neighborhood. In this paper, our motivation is to propose the novel neighborhood structures that remove undesirable niching parameters without sacrificing perf...

Multimodal medical image fusion based on Yager’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets

The objective of image fusion for medical images is to combine multiple images obtained from various sources into a single image suitable for better diagnosis. Most of the state-of-the-art image fusing technique is based on nonfuzzy sets, and the fused image so obtained lags with complementary information. Intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFS) are determined to be more suitable for civilian, and medi...

Achieving Multimodal Cohesion during Intercultural Conversations

How do English as a lingua franca (ELF) speakers achieve multimodal cohesion on the basis of their specific interests and cultural backgrounds? From a dialogic and collaborative view of communication, this study focuses on how verbal and nonverbal modes cohere together during intercultural conversations. The data include approximately 160-minute transcribed video recordings of ELF interactions ...

SOLVING BEST PATH PROBLEM ON MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS WITH FUZZY COSTS

Numerous algorithms have been proposed to solve the shortest-pathproblem; many of them consider a single-mode network and crispcosts. Other attempts have addressed the problem of fuzzy costs ina single-mode network, the so-called fuzzy shortest-path problem(FSPP). The main contribution of the present work is to solve theoptimum path problem in a multimodal transportation network, inwhich the co...
