Protecting Touch: Authenticated App-To-Server Channels for Mobile Devices Using NFC Tags
نویسندگان
چکیده
Traditional authentication methods (e.g., password, PIN) often do not scale well to the context of mobile devices in terms of security and usability. However, the adoption of Near Field Communication (NFC) on a broad range of smartphones enables the use of NFC-enabled tokens as an additional authentication factor. This additional factor can help to improve the security, as well as usability of mobile apps. In this paper, we evaluate the use of different types of existing NFC tags as tokens for establishing authenticated secure sessions between smartphone apps and web services. Based on this evaluation, we present two concepts for a user-friendly secure authentication mechanism for mobile apps, the Protecting Touch (PT) architectures. These two architectures are designed to be implemented with either end of the spectrum of inexpensive and widely-available NFC tags while maintaining a reasonable trade-off between security, availability and cost.

This work analyses the use of NFC technology to simplify the interactions of users with context-aware services offered by intelligent environments. Touch Computing is a novel explicit user interaction mechanism in which users accompanied by their NFC-enabled mobile devices request services from the environment by touching tags or other NFC-enabled devices. This paper describes the deployment of...

An inherent obstacle in current mobile applications is the limited output capabilities of mobile phones. This paper describes a solution to this limitation that is based on a combination of a public display and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The public display, represented by a projection in the developed prototype, is augmented with a matrix of NFC tags whereby each tag is analogou...
متن کاملMORENA: A Middleware for Programming NFC-Enabled Android Applications as Distributed Object-Oriented Programs
NFC is a wireless technology that allows software to interact with RFID tags and that is increasingly integrated into smartphones and other mobile devices. In this paper, we present MORENA: a middleware that treats NFC-enabled programs as distributed object-oriented programs in which RFID tags are represented as intermittently connected remote objects. We draw inspiration from the ambient-orien...

We investigate the use of 2 tagging technologies: Near Field Communication (NFC) and 2-dimensional barcodes. Our investigation combined a field trial and interview based study with an experimental evaluation. The field trial focused on users’ experience of the usability of NFC for a range of trial services, users’ perceptions of NFC use in their daily life context, and users’ suggestions for po...
