An improved, free surface, topographic technique

چکیده
Current techniques of water wave visualisation such as shadowgraphy and stereophotography are widely used but are deficient in many aspects. Refraction based visualisation observes the bending of light as it traverses across a water wave -air interface. This work describes the continued development of techniques to measure the surface height of a liquid free surface. The method utilizes refraction of light at the free surface as a function of the local angle of that surface. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used to interrogate a target image viewed through the free surface.

Numerical Investigation of Vertical and Horizontal Baffle Effects on Liquid Sloshing in a Rectangular Tank Using an Improved Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Method
Liquid sloshing is a common phenomenon in the transporting of liquid tanks. Liquid waves lead to fluctuating forces on the tank wall. If these fluctuations are not predicted or controlled, they can lead to large forces and momentum. Baffles can control liquid sloshing fluctuations. One numerical method, widely used to model the liquid sloshing phenomena is Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)....
متن کاملEffects of Realistic Surface Topography on Seismic Ground Motion in the Yangminshan Region of Taiwan Based Upon the Spectral-Element Method and LiDAR DTM
We combine light detection and ranging (LiDAR) digital terrain model (DTM) data and an improved mesh implementation to investigate the effects of highresolution surface topography on seismic ground motion based upon the spectralelement method. In general, topography increases the amplitude of shaking at mountain tops and ridges, whereas valleys usually have reduced ground motion, as has been ob...
متن کاملCorrelation of topographic surface and volume data from three-dimensional electron microscopy.
Three-dimensional(3D) reconstructions from tilt series in an electron microscope show in general an anisotropic resolution due to an instrumentally limited tilt angle. As a consequence, the information in the z direction is blurred, thus making it difficult to detect the boundary of the reconstructed structures. In contrast, high-resolution topography data from microscopic surface techniques pr...
متن کاملExplosion-Source Energy Partitioning and Lg-Wave Excitation: Contributions of Free-Surface Scattering
A 2D boundary-element numerical simulation approach and a local slowness analysis method for an embedded array are used to quantify effects of topographic scattering on near-source energy partitioning for simple underground explosion sources. Various parameters, including free-surface models with different root mean square (rms) random topographic fluctuations and correlation lengths, source de...
متن کاملImproved estimates of incident radiation and heat load using non-parametric regression against topographic variables
Question: Can non-parametric multiplicative regression (NPMR) improve estimates of potential direct incident radiation (PDIR) and heat load based on topographic variables, as compared to least-squares multiple regression against trigonometric transforms of the predictors? Methods: We used a multiplicative kernel smoothing technique to interpolate between tabulated values of PDIR, using a locall...
