Tomographic image of crust and upper mantle off the Boso Peninsula using data from an ocean-bottom seismograph array

چکیده
We determined the three-dimensional structure of the crust and upper mantle off the Boso Peninsula, Japan, by analyzing seismograms recorded by ocean-bottom seismometers and land stations between 2011 and 2013. We employed seismic tomography to determine the Pand S-wave velocity structures and earthquake locations simultaneously. The tomographic image shows that the mantle parts of the Pacific and the Philippine Sea plates have highvelocity anomalies. The upper boundary of the Philippine Sea plate is delineated as approximately 2–6 km shallower than that previously estimated from land-based data for the area 140.5°E–141.5°E and 35°N–35.5°N. A pronounced low-velocity anomaly in Pand S-waves with low-Vp/Vs ratio (1.5–1.6) was observed at depths shallower than 20 km in the overriding North American plate. This anomaly may be caused by the presence of rocks with a low-Vp/Vs ratio, such as quartzite, and the water expelled from the subducted Pacific and Philippine Sea plates.

Upper boundaries of the Pacific and Philippine Sea plates near the triple junction off the Boso Peninsula deduced from ocean-bottom seismic observations
We determined hypocenter distributions and focal mechanisms of earthquakes off the Boso Peninsula, Japan, based on seafloor observations using ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSs). From OBS data, we detected and located earthquakes that were closer to the trenches than had previously been reported. The determined focal depths of relocated hypocenters were systematically shallower than those in the ...
متن کاملDepth of the 660-km discontinuity near the Mariana slab from an array of ocean bottom seismographs
[1] High frequency records of deep Mariana earthquakes from a dense array of ocean bottom seismographs deployed in the Mariana arc and back-arc regions are stacked and searched for the phases P660p and S660p to constrain the depth of the 660-km discontinuity near the Mariana slab. Results of the high-resolution study suggest that around 18 N the 660-km discontinuity lies at about 710–730 km (±1...

[1] A joint interpretation of swath bathymetric, seismic refraction, wide-angle reflection, and multichannel seismic data was used to derive a detailed tomographic image of the Nazca–South America subduction zone system offshore southern Arauco peninsula, Chile at 38 S. Here, the trench basin is filled with up to 2.2 km of sediments, and the Mocha Fracture Zone (FZ) is obliquely subducting unde...
متن کاملSeismic array detection of subducted oceanic crust in the lower mantle
[1] We analyze short-period precursory energy to PP that can be observed in seismograms in the distance range from 95 to 105 to infer the behavior of subducted slabs beneath western Pacific subduction zones. PP is a P wave once reflected at the free surface between the source and receiver. Using high-resolution seismic array techniques, we analyze the incidence angle, timing, and azimuth of the...
