Molecular phylogenetic confirmation of Gnathostoma spinigerum Owen, 1836 (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae) in Laos and Thailand.

چکیده
We report the molecular-phylogenetic identification of larvae of the nematode genus Gnathostoma Owen, 1836 collected from a snake, Ptyas koros Schlegel, in Laos and adult worms from the stomach of a dog in Thailand. DNA was extracted and amplified targeting the partial cox1 gene and the ITS-2 region of ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that all five advanced thirdstage larvae and seven adult worms were Gnathostoma spinigerum Owen, 1836. This is also the first molecular evidence of infection with G. spinigerum in a snake from Laos.

An Overview of Gnathostomiasis in the World
Gnathostomiasis is a typical fish-borne parasitic zoonosis. Gnathostoma spinigerum has long been considered the only species to cause human infection. Because of the distribution of this species and the eating habits of the people, gnathostomiasis was thought an unique parasitic disease in Asia, especially in Thailand and Japan. Around the 1970s, however, the presence of this disease was report...
متن کاملIntra-ocular gnathostomiasis.
INTRA-OCULAR helminthiasis is very rare in temperate regions (Ashton, 1960) and comparatively rare in the tropics. Invasion of the human eye by Gnathostoma spinigerum is rarer still, although many cases in remote and backward areas may have gone unreported. The most recent was that reported from Burma by Ko Gyi (1960). Gnathostoma spinigerum was first recovered from a gastric tumour in the tige...
متن کاملA Recombinant Matrix Metalloproteinase Protein from Gnathostoma spinigerum for Serodiagnosis of Neurognathostomiasis
Neurognathostomiasis is a severe form of human gnathostomiasis which can lead to disease and death. Diagnosis of neurognathostomiasis is made presumptively by using clinical manifestations. Immunoblotting, which recognizes antigenic components of molecular mass 21 kDa and 24 kDa in larval extracts of Gnathostoma spinigerum (Gs 21/24), has high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of neurog...
متن کاملGnathostoma spinigerum Mitochondrial Genome Sequence: a Novel Gene Arrangement and its Phylogenetic Position within the Class Chromadorea
Human gnathostomiasis is an emerging food-borne parasitic disease caused by nematodes in the genus Gnathostoma. In spite of their significance as pathogens, these parasites remain poorly understood at the molecular level. In the present study, we sequenced the mitochondrial (mt) genome of G. spinigerum, which infects a range of definitive hosts including dogs, cats, tigers, leopards and humans....
متن کاملPila ampullacea and Pomacea canaliculata, as new paratenic hosts of Gnathostoma spinigerum.
Aquatic snails, Pila ampullacea and Pomacea canaliculata were experimentally found to be suitable paratenic hosts for advanced third-stage larvae (L3) of the nematode Gnathostoma spinigerum, the causative parasite of gnathostomiasis in humans. G. spinigerum (L3) were found to be encapsulated in the tissue of the snail's foot and its internal organs. The infection, intensity and survival of thir...
