چکیده

This paper describes the acquisition and analysis of imaging data for the identification of galaxies associated with z ∼ 4 damped Lyα systems. We present deep BRI images of three fields known to contain four z ∼ 4 damped systems. We discuss the reduction and calibration of the data, detail the color criteria used to identify z ∼ 4 galaxies, and present a photometric redshift analysis to complement the color selection. We have found no galaxy candidates closer to the QSO than 7 which could be responsible for the damped Lyα systems. Assuming that at least one of the galaxies is not directly beneath the QSO, we set an upper limit on this damped Lyα system of L < L∗LBG/4. Finally, we have established a web site to release these imaging data to the public (http://kingpin.ucsd.edu/∼dlaimg). Subject headings: galaxy formation — quasars : absorption lines

The Subaru Deep Field Project : Lyman Α Emitters at Redshift of 6

We present new results of a deep optical imaging survey using a narrowband filter (NB921) centered at λ = 9196 Å together with B, V , R, i, and z broadband filters in the sky area of the Subaru Deep Field which has been promoted as one of legacy programs of the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. We obtained a photometric sample of 58 Lyα emitter candidates at z ≈ 6.5 – 6.6 among ∼ 180 strong NB921-excess (...

Spectroscopic Calibration of uBVRI Photometric Selection

We present a survey for z ∼ 3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) associated with damped Lyman α systems (DLAs) with the primary purpose of determining the DLA-LBG cross-correlation. This paper describes the acquisition and analysis of imaging and spectroscopic data of 9 quasar fields having 11 known z ∼ 3 DLAs covering an area of 465 arcmin. Using deep uBVRI images, 796 LBG candidates to an apparent R...

The Canada-France Redshift Survey I: Introduction to the survey, photometric catalogs and surface brightness selection e ects

The Canada-France Redshift Survey has been undertaken to provide a large well-de ned sample of faint galaxies at high redshift in which the selection criteria match as closely as possible those of samples of nearby galaxies. The survey is designed to have a median redshift of z 0.6 corresponding to a look-back time of half the present age of the Universe for 1. Such a survey can then be used fo...

The ESO-Spitzer Imaging extragalactic Survey (ESIS)

Context. The ESO-Spitzer Imaging extragalactic Survey (ESIS) is the optical follow up of the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) in the ELAIS-S1 region of the sky. Aims. In the era of observational cosmology, the main efforts are focused on the study of galaxy evolution and its environmental dependence. Wide area, multiwavelength, extragalactic surveys are needed in order t...

Unveiling the oldest and most massive galaxies at very high redshift

The identification and characterization of massive galaxies over a wide redshift range allow us to place stringent constraints on the cosmic history of galaxy mass assembly and on current models of galaxy formation and evolution. This work explores the existence of high redshift massive galaxies unveiled with Spitzer+IRAC, but missed by conventional selection techniques based on optical and nea...
