Full Substitutability∗

چکیده
Various forms of substitutability are essential for establishing the existence of equilibria and other useful properties in diverse settings such as matching, auctions, and exchange economies with indivisible goods. We extend earlier models’ definitions of substitutability to settings in which each agent can be both a buyer in some transactions and a seller in others, and show that all these definitions are equivalent. We then introduce a new class of substitutable preferences that allows us to model intermediaries with production capacity. We also prove that substitutability is preserved under economically important transformations such as trade endowments, mergers, and limited liability. JEL Classification: C62, C78, D44, D47

Full Dynamic Substitutability by SAT Encoding
Symmetry in constraint problems can be exploited to greatly improve search performance. A form of symmetry that has been the subject of considerable research is value interchangeability. Automatically detecting full interchangeability is thought to be intractable, so research has focused on either discovery of local interchangeability or programmer knowledge of full interchangeability. This pap...
متن کاملSustainability, limited substitutability, and non-constant social discount rates
The paper shows how limited substitutability in consumption between different classes of goods affects the magnitude and time development of social discount rates. It decomposes the discount rates into an absolute growth and a relative growth or substitutability effect. The paper relates between-good and intertemporal substitutability to the notions of weak and strong sustainability. It analyze...
متن کاملModelling the Substitutability of Discourse Connectives
Processing discourse connectives is important for tasks such as discourse parsing and generation. For these tasks, it is useful to know which connectives can signal the same coherence relations. This paper presents experiments into modelling the substitutability of discourse connectives. It shows that substitutability effects distributional similarity. A novel variancebased function for compari...
متن کاملStability and Competitive Equilibrium in Trading Networks
We introduce a model in which agents in a network can trade via bilateral contracts. We find that when continuous transfers are allowed and utilities are quasilinear, the full substitutability of preferences is sufficient to guarantee the existence of stable outcomes for any underlying network structure. Furthermore, the set of stable outcomes is essentially equivalent to the set of competitive...
