Enhanced Catabolite Repression in Escherichia coli by Growth on Combined Substrates.

چکیده
Catabolite repression of 3-galactosidase formation in Escherichia coli ML30 is readily observed when cultures are grown aerobically in media containing glucose or gluconate as carbon and energy sources. If cultures growing exponentially under these conditions are transferred to an anaerobic environment, catabolite repression is temporarily abolished (M. Cohn and K. Horibata, J. Bacteriol. 78:624,1959; W. J. Dobrogosz, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 100:553, 1965). The results presented in this report show that the transition from aerobiosis to anaerobiosis does not completely abolish repression if the cultures are grown in medium containing a combination of glucose and gluconate. All procedures used in these experiments were essentially identical to those described elsewhere (W. J. Dobrogosz, Biochim, Biophys. Acta 100:553, 1965). As shown in Fig. 1, cultures growing on either glu-

Catabolite repression and pyruvate metabolism in Escherichia coli.
A study was made of the reactions involved in the cellular regulatory function known as catabolite repression. These studies employed the glucose-repressible, beta-galactosidase system of Escherichia coli and involved an investigation of glucose dissimilation under cultural conditions capable of permitting or preventing expression of catabolite repression. The results indicated that reactions a...
متن کاملEffect of amino sugars on catabolite repression in Escherichia coli.
N-acetylglucosamine was found to be a good repressor source for catabolite repression of the beta-galactosidase system in Escherichia coli. It was found capable of increasing the severity of repression by glucose or gluconate when included in the medium with either of these substrates. N-acetylglucosamine was shown to be assimilated under these conditions, but had no effect on culture growth ra...

متن کاملRegulation of acetohydroxy acid synthase in streptomycin-dependent Escherichia coli.
Growth of streptomycin-dependent mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 was insensitive to valine when dihydrostreptomycin was present in a nonlimiting concentration in glucose-salts medium. Acetohydroxy acid synthase was derepressed under these conditions, owing to relaxation of catabolite repression. Valine sensitivity and catabolite repression were restored when streptomycin-dependent E. coli K-12...
متن کاملGlucose-lactose diauxie in Escherichia coli.
Growth of Escherichia coli in medium containing glucose, at a concentration insufficient to support full growth, and containing lactose, is diauxic. A mutation in the gene, CR, which determines catabolite repression specific to the lac operon, was found to relieve glucose-lactose but not glucose-maltose diauxie. Furthermore, a high concentration of lactose was shown to overcome diauxie in a CR(...
