Induced Loss of a Ring and a Telomeric Chromosome in Drosophila Melanogaster.

چکیده
ING chromosomes are potentially useful for studying the process of rejoining R after chromosome breakage, since a certain portion of the restitutions should produce dicentric ring chromosomes or interlocked rings rather than structurally normal chromosomes. The relevance of ring chromosomes studies to problems of induced chromosome breakage in Drosophila melanogaster sperm has been recognized for some time (e.g., BAUER 1942; CATCHESIDE and LEA 1945; BAKER and VON HALLE 1955). However, the interpretation of many aspects of this work has been hampered by two factors: a comparable telomeric3 chromosome was not available for comparison with the ring-X and marked Y chromosomes were not used with the result that loss of the X chromosome could not be detected directly. The study being reported consists of a re-examination of the process of induced ring chromosome loss4 coupled with the evidence this provides on the mechanism of the oxygen effect on chromosome breakage and rejoining. These data furnish no evidence against the hypothesis that the greater sensitivity of the ring chromosome to induce loss is caused by its ring nature. The data suggest, however, that some novel mechanism may underlie the formation of dominant lethals in the sex chromosomes of Drosophila.

Aconitase and Developmental EndPointsasEarly IndicatorsofCellularToxicity Induced by Xenobiotics in Drosophila Melanogaster
Background: In this study, the toxicity of the different xenobiotics was tested on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster model system. Methods: Fly larvae were raised on food supplemented with xenobioticsat different concentrations (sodium nitroprusside (0.1-1.5 mM), S-nitrosoglutathione (0.5-4 mM), and potassium ferrocyanide (1 mM)). Emergence of flies, food intake by larvae, and pupation h...

Checkpoint mechanisms that respond to DNA damage in the mitotic cell cycle are necessary to maintain the fidelity of chromosome transmission. These mechanisms must be able to distinguish the normal telomeres of linear chromosomes from double-strand break damage. However, on several occasions, Drosophila chromosomes that lack their normal telomeric DNA have been recovered, raising the issue of w...
متن کاملConcentration dependent effect of morphine, aspirin, capsaicin and chili pepper hydro alcoholic extract on thermal and chemical pain model in fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
Introduction: Pain research using animal models is related to ethical concerns, so invertebrates and insects have been recommended by researchers. In the present study, the nociceptive and antinociceptive effects of capsaicin, aspirin, morphine and chili extract were examined using fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as an alternative for rodent pain model. Methods: Stage 3 of larvae and ad...

Background: Flubendiamide, comparatively a new pesticide designed to eradicate lepidopteran insect pests is known to have low risk to birds, mammals, fish, algae, honey bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms, soil macro- and micro-organisms, non-target plants as well as sewage treatment organisms; however, the risk assessment for aquatic invertebrates from metabolite could not be finalized wit...
متن کاملSilencing at Drosophila telomeres: nuclear organization and chromatin structure play critical roles.
Transgenes inserted into the telomeric regions of Drosophila melanogaster chromosomes exhibit position effect variegation (PEV), a mosaic silencing characteristic of euchromatic genes brought into juxtaposition with heterochromatin. Telomeric transgenes on the second and third chromosomes are flanked by telomeric associated sequences (TAS), while fourth chromosome telomeric transgenes are most ...
