چکیده

Dijkstra and van Heuven have made an admirable attempt to develop a new model of bilingual memory, the BIA+. Their article presents a clear and well-reasoned theoretical justification of their model, followed by a description of their model. The BIA+ is, as the name implies, an extension of the Bilingual Interactive Activation (BIA) model (Dijkstra & van Heuven, 1998; Van Heuven, Dijkstra & Grainger, 1998; etc), which was itself an adaptation to bilingual memory of McClelland & Rumelhart’s (1981) Interactive Activation model of monolingual memory. The authors provide a wealth of background on bilingual memory cross-lingual interference and priming effects in what amounts to a veritable review of the literature in this area. The model that they propose is designed to account for many of these empirically observed effects. In what follows we will center our discussion around three points related to the design of their model. These issues are: • the use of modular vs. distributed representations; • learning; • emergence and self-organization of lexical items. We will discuss each of these points in turn.

Diophantine Approach to Blind Interference Alignment of Homogeneous K-user 21 MISO Broadcast Channels

Although the sufficient condition for a blindly interference-aligned (BIA) 2-user 2× 1 broadcast channel (BC) in homogeneous fading to achieve its maximal 4/3 DoF is well understood, its counterpart for the general K-user 2 × 1 MISO BC in homogeneous block fading to achieve the corresponding 2K 2+K−1 (DoF) remains unsolved and is, thus, the focus of this paper. An interference channel is said B...

Bioelectrical Impedance versus Body Mass Index for Predicting Body Composition Parameters in Sedentary Job Women

Objective: Nowadays the value of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in the estimation of body adiposity both on a clinical basis in the individual and epidemiologically in large populations is of great interest. The current study determine accuracy of BIA compared with body mass index (BMI) measurement for estimating body composition in a group of normal weight employee women with a sedenta...

Explorative Study on the Influence of National Cultures on Business/IT Alignment Maturity

A key success factor for a successful company in a dynamic environment is effective and efficient information technology (IT) supporting business strategies and processes. Organizations that successfully align their business strategy and their IT strategy outperform their non-aligned peers (Chan et al., 1997). In recent surveys IT executives consistently name IT to Business alignment their top-...

Adoption of Business Intelligence & Analytics in Organizations - An Empirical Study of Antecedents

Although Business Intelligence& Analytics (BIA) systems are increasingly seen as a source of competitive advantage, limited research, to our knowledge, has examined the factors driving their organizational adoption. Drawing on TechnologyOrganization-Environment framework, we present a theoretical model of factors associated with the extent of organizational adoption of BIA technologies and test...

Description of bulk inversion asymmetry in the effective-bond-orbital model

We have extended the effective-bond-orbital model ~EBOM! method @Y. C. Chang, Phys. Rev. B 37, 8215 ~1988!# to include the effects of the bulk inversion asymmetry ~BIA! present in zinc blendes. This is accomplished without adding to the number of basis states or extending the range of interaction. We have also investigated a variant form of the EBOM proposed in the original formulation that off...
