چکیده

In the past, ecologists have been debating about the relative importance of density-dependent versus density-independent factors in determining population dynamics. Between 1989 and 1992, an experiment was conducted at the University of Reading for studying how both densityindependent and density-dependent factors affect greenbottle blowfly population dynamic structure. See Daniels (1994). Taking the duration of different life stages in the blowfly’s life cycle into account, Daniels decided to record the bi-daily abundance of larvas (L), “new” and “viable” pupae (P ), and adults (A) of 12 confined populations. She also designed a repeat 2 × 2 factorial experiment to study two levels of a density-independent factor—cadmium diet (treatment: present, or control: absent), and two levels of a density-dependent factor—initial density (high: 150 pupae and 150 adults, or low: 30 pupae and 30 adults). Three of the 12 populations are assigned to each of the four experimental conditions. There are approximately two years of data for each population. Based on common stochastic state-transition model for population dynamic, a partially specified biological model for the blowfly is:

Dynamics of an eco-epidemic model with stage structure for predator

The predator-prey model with stage structure for predator is generalized in the context of ecoepidemiology, where the prey population is infected by a microparasite and the predator completely avoids consuming the infected prey. The intraspecific competition of infected prey is considered. All the equilibria are characterized and the existence of a Hopf bifurcation at the coexistence equilibriu...

Changing dynamics: Time-varying autoregressive models using generalized additive modeling.

In psychology, the use of intensive longitudinal data has steeply increased during the past decade. As a result, studying temporal dependencies in such data with autoregressive modeling is becoming common practice. However, standard autoregressive models are often suboptimal as they assume that parameters are time-invariant. This is problematic if changing dynamics (e.g., changes in the tempora...

Identifying flies used for maggot debridement therapy.

To the Editor: The use of maggots to clean necrotic wounds, known as maggot debridement therapy (MDT), has long been known to the scientific world. Its use has been recorded since the 1500s when soldiers’ wounds were often infested with maggots. Napoleon’s surgeon, Baron Dominic Larrey, reported that wounds that were infested with maggots appeared to heal faster than those without maggots.1 Wil...

Neutral Delay Equations from and for Population Dynamics

For a certain class of neutral differential equations it is shown that these equations can serve as population models in the sense that they can be interpreted as special cases or caricatures of the standard Gurtin-MacCamy model for a population structured by age with birth and death rate depending on the total adult population. The delayed logistic equation does not belong to this class but th...

GENERALIZED FLEXIBILITY-BASED MODEL UPDATING APPROACH VIA DEMOCRATIC PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE PROGNOSIS

This paper presents a new model updating approach for structural damage localization and quantification. Based on the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), a new damage-sensitive cost function is introduced by employing the main diagonal and anti-diagonal members of the calculated Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM) for the monitored structure and its analytical model. Then, ...
