Weed Control in Southern Hardwood Nurseries
نویسنده
چکیده
In the South, most nursery managers have relied on methyl bromide for weed control in hardwood seedbeds. When methyl bromide is no longer available, handweeding times will likely increase unless management regimes adapt to the change. Some nursery managers will increase use of both sanitation practices and herbicides. Although several herbicides are registered for use on hardwoods, some can injure seedlings when applied to seedbeds. Grasses can be effectively controlled with selective herbicides. Many small seeded broadleaf weeds can be suppressed with preemergence herbicides. Information on registered herbicides for hardwoods is provided.

Weed Control in US
In southern pine seedbeds, weed control relies on the use of diphenylether herbicides (oxyfluorfen, lactofen) and selective grass herbicides (sethoxydim and fluzifop-p-butyl). A number of nurseries use a polymer to stabilize the soil after sowing. This helps keep the herbicide barrier intact and extends the preemergence activity. Weekly postemergence applications of low rates are common and hav...

In spring 1995, an eastern cottonwood (Populus delfoides) plantation was established on a former agricultural field in Sharkey County, MS to evaluate the effects of clonal variety and mechanical weed control on aboveground biomass production. Four cottonwood clones, ST-66, ST-72, ST-75 and S7C-1 were planted on a 12 foot x 12 foot spacing and subjected to 2 mechanical weed control treatments (d...
متن کاملEffects of surface treatments and application shanks on nematode, pathogen and weed control with 1,3-dichloropropene.
BACKGROUND Preplant fumigation with methyl bromide (MeBr) has been used for control of soilborne pests in high-value annual, perennial and nursery crops, but is being phased out. In 2007 and 2008, research trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of surface treatments and two application shanks on pest control with 1,3-dicloropropene (1,3-D) in perennial crop nurseries. RESULTS All 1,3-D...
متن کاملMaleic Hydrazide Unsuitable for Controlling Height Growth of Green Ash and Shumard Oak Seedlings
In southern nurseries, hardwood seedlings often grow so large that they are difficult to lift and plant. In a study at the Southern Hardwoods Laboratory, maleic hydrazide (MH) was tested as a means of halting height growth when seedlings reach suitable size. Seeds of green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) and Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii Buckl.) were nursery sown during the summer of 1961....
متن کاملEffect of early age woody and herbaceous competition control on wood properties of loblolly pine
Early age competition control has been reported to significantly improve the growth and yield of plantation grown loblolly pine. The objective of this paper is to understand the changes in wood properties: basal area weighted whole disk SG, earlywood SG (EWSG), latewood SG (LWSG) and latewood percent (LWP) of 14 year-old trees which received early age herbaceous and hardwood competition control...
