Intravenous Magnesium Prevents Atrial Fibrillation after Valvular Heart Surgery
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common complication after cardiac surgery, its frequency ranges between 25– 40% reaching upto 50% following bypass surgeries as reported in previous studies. Several reports have indicated that postoperative AF is associated with significantly increased morbidity and mortality. 2 Our primary aim in this study was to investigate the effectiveness of prophylactic magnesium sulfate in the prophylaxis of atrial fibrillation and compare them with a control group during and following cardiac surgery.

Intravenous magnesium prevents atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting: a meta-analysis of 7 double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trials
BACKGROUND Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common complication after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The preventive effect of magnesium on POAF is not well known. This meta-analysis was undertaken to assess the efficacy of intravenous magnesium on the prevention of POAF after CABG. METHODS Eligible studies were identified from electronic databases (Medline, Embase...
متن کاملIntravenous magnesium for cardiac arrhythmias: jack of all trades.
Intravenous magnesium has been used to prevent and treat many different types of cardiac arrhythmia. It has diverse electrophysiological actions on the conduction system of the heart; including prolonging sinus node recovery time, and reducing automaticity, atrioventricular nodal conduction, antegrade and retrograde conduction over an accessory pathway, and His-ventricular conduction. Intraveno...
متن کاملIndependent Effect of Digoxin in Preventing Atrial Fibrillation in High Risk Patients after CABG Surgery
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common arrhythmias after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. AF can result in hemodynamic instability, thromboembolic events, increase the perioperative myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, stroke, more length of hospital stay (LOHS) and cost of treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the independent effect of...
متن کاملPrevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation: what is the best approach?
Atrial fibrillation is the most frequent complication after coronary artery bypass surgery, occurring in up to 40% of patients (1). It is even more common in those undergoing valvular surgery, especially of the mitral valve, occurring in as many as 64% of patients (2). Most episodes of atrial fibrillation occur within the first few days after surgery, with a peak incidence on postoperative days...
متن کاملProphylactic intravenous magnesium sulphate in addition to oral {beta}-blockade does not prevent atrial arrhythmias after coronary artery or valvular heart surgery: a randomized, controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Atrial arrhythmias (AA) are an important cause of morbidity after cardiac surgery. Efforts at prevention of postoperative AA have been suboptimal. Perioperative beta-blocker administration is the standard of care at many centers. Although prophylactic administration of magnesium sulfate (MgSO(4)) has been recommended, review of all previously published trials of MgSO(4) reveals confl...
