Group Delay Measurement in Single-Mode Fibers with True Picosecond Resolution Using Double Optical Modulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Highly accurate group delay measurements in long singlemode fibers were achieved over the full 1200-1600 nm spectral range by measuring phase shifts of a modulated lightwave. The high modulation frequency is shifted down to the kilohertz range using a second optical modulation at the fiber output end, so that low-frequency ultrasensitive detection and phase measurement can be performed with high-frequency resolution conserved. This results in extremely reliable measurements with a < 1-ps resolution using a fully remote light source such as a LED or even a halogen lamp.

All-Fiber Interferometer for Chromatic Dispersion Measurements
Abstrucf-A new all-fiber interferometric method for chromatic dispersion measurements in meter-length single-mode fibers is presented. In a Michelson setup a reference fiber is used whose physical length is varied so as to obtain an adjustable optical delay. Time resolution, ease of manipulation, and mechanical isolation are considerably improved with respect to conventional interferometers. Re...
متن کاملEFFECT OF LOSS AND PULSE WIDTH VARIATION ON SOLITON PROPAGATION Part I. Fundamentals of soliton propagation
In this work, the propagation of solitons in single-mode optical fibers has been investigated theoretically by using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This equation combines the effects of group velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation present in optical fibers and also takes into account the loss of optical fiber. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been solved numerically by using t...
متن کاملEvaluation of Polarization Mode Dispersion and Chromatic Dispersion using Quantum Interferometry
The use of quantum correlations between photons to measure polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion is investigated. Two types of apparatus are discussed which use coincidence counting of entangled photon pairs to allow sub-femtosecond resolution for measurement of both PMD and chromatic dispersion, as well as separation of even-order and odd-order chromatic effects in the PM...

Applications of single-mode fibers to coherent optical fiber communication systems1 and fiber sensor systems2 require a definite state of polarization along the fiber length. Polarization-maintaining fibers such as elliptically clad3 and stress-applied4 single-mode fibers have a high internal birefringence that exceeds perturbing birefringence and produces linear polarization along the fiber.
