Accepted: 29/09/2015 Abstract The control and manipulation of reproduction is the subject of scientific interest for many years. High level of reproductive performance can be achieved under optimum managemental conditions because reproduction is directly affected by various managemental factors. Manipulation of these factors causes changes in reproductive performance. Seasonal breeders are animals that successfully mate during certain times of the year. These times of year allow for births with an optimum condition for the survival of the young. Seasonal breeders like sheep and goat are convenient domestic species for biological investigation and application because these species have diversified products of commercial value. To maximize the production potential of seasonal breeders it is essential to increase the reproductive rate. There are number of factors that affect reproductive efficiency such as climate, stress factors other than heat stress, social environment, nutrition, disease, population density, gonadotropins, photoperiod. Globalised research has generated number of important technological reproductive methods that can be applied to increase the reproductive efficiency of seasonal breeders. Most of the recent developments in optimizing reproductive efficiency are expensive but improve reproductive performance.

Seasonal appearance and seasonal disappearance of menstrual function.

Seasonal appearance and seasonal disappearance of menstrual function Sir, Garai and co-workers' observation of seasonality in the occurrence of the first missed menstrual bleeding in perime-nopausal women (Garai et al., 2004) indicates that human menstrual function is influenced by seasonally varying environmental factors. As the authors assert, the influence of these seasonal triggers might be...

The adaptive value of energy storage and capital breeding in seasonal environments

Timing of reproduction in a seasonal cycle is a life history trait with important fitness consequences. Capital breeders produce offspring from stored resources and, by decoupling feeding and reproduction, may bend the constraints caused by seasonality in food or predation. Income breeders, on the other hand, produce offspring from concurrent food intake, with the disadvantage of less flexibili...

Circadian clocks and the measurement of daylength in seasonal reproduction.

Temperate zone organisms measure changes in daylength to adapt to seasonal changes in their environment. Recent studies have revealed that the long day (LD)-induced thyrotropin (TSH) in the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary gland act as a master factor regulating seasonal reproduction on the the ependymal cells (ECs) within the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) to induce expression of type 2 dei...

Coping with a challenging environment: effects of seasonal variability and reproductive status on glucocorticoid concentrations of female baboons (Papio cynocephalus).

Environmental stressors impact physiology and behavior in many species of animals. These effects are partly mediated through changing concentrations of glucocorticoids, which also vary with reproductive state and social conditions. Prior research has focused largely on seasonal breeders, but the close temporal linkage between season and reproductive state in these species hinders ability to dis...

Coping with the extremes: stress physiology varies between winter and summer in breeding opportunists.

Seasonal changes in stress steroid hormone secretions are thought to reflect investment in self-maintenance versus reproduction. The capricious conditions hypothesis (CCH) posits that reduced corticosterone (CORT) secretion during stress coincident with parental phases of breeding is necessary in harsh environments because a full response would otherwise trigger repeated nest abandonments. To t...
