Importance Driven Texture Coordinate Optimization

چکیده
Traditionally, texture coordinates have been generated based solely on the model’s geometry, often even before a model’s textures have been created. With the arrival of new technologies, such as 3D paint programs, weaknesses of a static optimization pre-process are becoming apparent. These weaknesses arise from constructing a parameterization based solely on the model’s geometry, ignoring the fact that detail is not uniformly spaced throughout the texture space. In fact, certain regions of the texture are more important than other regions. In this paper we introduce the notion of the “importance map” and describe how importance values are derived from both intrinsic properties of the texture and user-guided highlights. Furthermore, we describe how importance maps are used to drive the texture coordinate optimization. Finally, we show how this optimization process can be integrated into a 3D painting environment, enabling periodic optimization at any stage of texture design. Additional

Differential Geometry from the Frenet Point of View: Boundary Detection, Stereo, Texture and Color
Frenet frames are a central construction in modern differential geometry, in which structure is described with respect to an object of interest rather than with respect to external coordinate systems. The Cartan moving frame model specifies how these frames adapt when they are transported along the object. We consider this as a model for integrating local information with information in a neigh...
متن کاملStochastic Optimization with Importance Sampling
Uniform sampling of training data has been commonly used in traditional stochastic optimization algorithms such as Proximal Stochastic Gradient Descent (prox-SGD) and Proximal Stochastic Dual Coordinate Ascent (prox-SDCA). Although uniform sampling can guarantee that the sampled stochastic quantity is an unbiased estimate of the corresponding true quantity, the resulting estimator may have a ra...
متن کاملShape Parameterization Comparison for Full-film Lubrication Texture Design
Minimizing energy loss and improving system load capacity and compactness are important objectives for fluid power applications. Recent studies have revealed that a micro-textured surface can reduce friction in full-film lubrication, and an asymmetric textured surface can further improve the performance by reducing friction and increasing normal force simultaneously. As an extension of these pr...
متن کاملFaster Coordinate Descent via Adaptive Importance Sampling
Coordinate descent methods employ random partial updates of decision variables in order to solve huge-scale convex optimization problems. In this work, we introduce new adaptive rules for the random selection of their updates. By adaptive, we mean that our selection rules are based on the dual residual or the primal-dual gap estimates and can change at each iteration. We theoretically character...
متن کاملFaster Optimization through Adaptive Importance Sampling
The current state of the art stochastic optimization algorithms (SGD, SVRG, SCD, SDCA, etc.) are based on sampling one active datapoint uniformly at random in each iteration. Changing these probabilities to better reflect the importance of each datapoint is a natural and powerful idea. In this thesis we analyze Stochastic Coordinate Descent methods with fixed non-uniform and adaptive sampling. ...
