چکیده

At first glance, children’s word learning appears to be mostly a problem of learning words like dog and run. However, it is small words like and and or that enable the construction of complex combinatorial language. How do children learn the meaning of these function words? Using transcripts of parentchild interactions, we investigate the cues in child-directed speech that can inform the interpretation and acquisition of the connective or, which has a particularly challenging semantics. Study 1 finds that, despite its low overall frequency, children use or at adult levels by age 4 in some speech acts. Study 2 uses annotations of a subset of parent-child interactions to show that disjunctions in child-directed speech are accompanied by reliable cues to the correct interpretation (exclusive vs. inclusive). We present a decision-tree model that learns from a handful of annotated examples to correctly predict the interpretation of a disjunction. These studies suggest that conceptual and prosodic cues in child-directed speech can provide information for the acquisition of functional categories like disjunction.

Are Homophones Acoustically Distinguished in Child-Directed Speech?

Many approaches to early word learning posit that children assume a one-to-one mapping of form and meaning. However, children's early vocabularies contain homophones, words that violate that assumption. Children might learn such words by exploiting prosodic differences between homophone meanings that are associated with lemma frequency (Gahl, 2008). Such differences have not yet been documented...

Multimodal Semantic Learning from Child-Directed Input

Children learn the meaning of words by being exposed to perceptually rich situations (linguistic discourse, visual scenes, etc). Current computational learning models typically simulate these rich situations through impoverished symbolic approximations. In this work, we present a distributed word learning model that operates on child-directed speech paired with realistic visual scenes. The mode...

Bootstrapping the syntactic bootstrapper: Probabilistic labelling of prosodic phrases

The syntactic bootstrapping hypothesis proposes that syntactic structure provides children with cues for learning the meaning of novel words. In this paper, we address the question of how children might start acquiring some aspects of syntax before they possess a sizeable lexicon. The study presents two models of early syntax acquisition that rest on three major assumptions grounded in the infa...

Learnability of prosodic boundaries: Is infant-directed speech easier?

This study explores the long-standing hypothesis that the acoustic cues to prosodic boundaries in infant-directed speech (IDS) make those boundaries easier to learn than those in adult-directed speech (ADS). Three cues (pause duration, nucleus duration, and pitch change) were investigated, by means of a systematic review of the literature, statistical analyses of a corpus of Japanese, and machi...

Prosodic Bootstrapping: A Critical Analysis of the Argument and the Evidence

The hypothesis that young infants rely on prosodic cues in speech 10 bootstrap their way into syntax has received considerable attention in recent discussions of early language development (e.g., Gleitman, Gleitman, Landau, & Wanner, 1988; Hirsh-Pasek, Kemler Nelson, Jusczyk, Cassidy, Druss, & Kennedy, 1987). The appeal of the prosodic bootstrapping hypothesis is easy to understand. If the boun...
