چکیده

ÐCommercially available alumina of 94% nominal purity was used to examine the in ̄uence of loading rate on toughening mechanisms. For ®ne-grained alumina, the crack resistance, KR, was found to be independent of crack length and loading rate. Coarse-grained alumina exhibited strongly rising R-curves where the initial fracture toughness, K0, was found to be independent of the loading rate. The net toughening, DKSS, in coarse-grained alumina was found to decrease with increasing loading rate. Loading rate e€ects were independent of testing environment. A rate dependent coecient of friction was incorporated into a crack bridging model to describe the e€ect of loading rate on toughness in this system. Predictions based on the bridging models, using the measured coecients of friction for this material system, are in good agreement with the observed phenomenon. # 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.

Time Dependent Debonding of Aluminum/Alumina Interfaces under Cyclic and Static Loading

The structural integrity of oxide/metal interfaces is important in many applications. While most attention has focused on the debonding of oxide/metal interfaces by conducting strength and fracture toughness tests, very few investigations have looked at time dependant failure of interfaces under cyclic or static loading. Tests have been conducted on sandwich specimens consisting of 5 100 micron...

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF STOPPING HOLES IN THE CRACK GROWTH

The fracture and crack growth of mechanical structures is a usual phenomenon which is due to the application of tensile, cyclic loading or thermal stresses on the structure. So introducing of methods to prevent the crack growth is useful. Afterward, one of the repairing methods of crack growth, consisting to make a hole in the crack tip to elimi-nate the sharp corners, was explained. This metho...

Evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk nanostructured Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si3-Al2O3 nanocomposite

Mechanical alloying and vacuum sintering have been used to produce bulk nanostructured Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si3-15Wt.% Al2O3 nanocomposite. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to study the microstructural characteristics of the samples. Indentation method was used to calculate hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness ...

Influence of the Solid Phase's Fractional Composition on the Filtration Characteristics of the Drilling Mud

Filtration of the drilling mud is one of it's most important parameters, especially when drilling-in producing formation. Decrease of filtration characteristics allows reducing both solid and liquid phases's penetration zone into the formation. The study of the effect of the weighting-bridging agent's fractional composition on the filtration rate allows selecting of optimal composition of the s...

Using a micromechanical finite element parametric study to motivate a phenomenological macroscale model for void/crack nucleation in aluminum with a hard second phase

A multi-scale methodology that includes microscale finite element simulations, physical experiments, and a macroscale phenomenological model was used to determine the appropriate first-order influence parameters relating to void/ crack nucleation. The finite element analyses were used to examine the role of seven independent features (number of silicon particle sites, uniformity of particle siz...
