Effects of diagenesis on the isotopic record of late paleogene tropical sea surface temperatures

چکیده
Oxygen isotope records of planktonic foraminifera indicate that Late Eocene and Oligocene tropical sea surface temperatures were as much as 88C lower than present at a time when high latitude sea surface temperatures were higher than present. Using a numerical model which describes oxygen isotope exchange during burial and recrystallization of deep sea carbonate, the effects of diagenesis on bulk carbonate dO records for the Cenozoic are quantified for four tropical sites. Most of the observed variations in measured dO values at all sites can be accounted for by diagenetic effects. There are no systematic trends that support substantial variations in tropical sea surface temperatures beyond diagenetic effects, with the possible exception of the Early Eocene for which the data are consistent with slightly higher sea surface temperatures. Reconstructions based on oxygen isotope records of planktonic foraminifera which indicate cooler tropical sea surface temperatures for the Eocene and Oligocene may be artifacts of diagenetic recrystallization as such records are particularly sensitive to diagenetic effects. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Carbonate oxygen isotope paleoaltimetry: evaluating the effect of diagenesis on paleoelevation estimates for the Tibetan plateau
Carbonate oxygen isotope paleoaltimetry is based on analysis of the dO value of carbonate precipitated from surface water. Deciphering the diagenetic history is important for establishing whether particular carbonates are accurate recorders of paleosurface waters, which reflect paleoelevation. This study provides examples from southern, east–central, and northeastern Tibet of approaches aimed a...
متن کاملPlanktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope analysis by ion microprobe technique suggests warm tropical sea surface temperatures during the Early Paleogene
[1] Cool tropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are reported for warm Paleogene greenhouse climates based on the dO of planktonic foraminiferal tests. These results are difficult to reconcile with models of greenhouse gas–forced climate. It has been suggested that this “cool tropics paradox” arises from postdepositional alteration of foraminiferal calcite, yielding erroneously high dO values....

In the present study, the sediments of the Gurpi Formation in the Jafarabad section located in the southeast of Ilam were examined from the point of view of calcareous calcareous nannofossils. The sediments of the upper part of Gurpi Formation with a thickness of about 42 m are composed of limy marl sediments. In this study, 34 species belonging to 22 genera from the group of calcareous nannopl...
