The Breeding System of Gilia Achilleifolia: Variation in Floral Characteristics and Outcrossing Rate.
نویسنده
چکیده
The outcrossing rate is a key component of the breeding system. While estimates of outcrossing rate exist for some plants, less information is available on variation in outcrossing rate within species and on its causes. Since many features of flowers affect the level of outcrossing, plant breeding systems are often inferred 'from observations on floral morphology, physiology, and phenology. Typically, such observations include whether plants are unisexual or cosexual, have perfect or unisexual flowers, are self-compatible or selfincompatible (Grant, 1958; Baker, 1959), whether flowers are protandrous, protogynous, or homogamous (Faegri and van der Pijl, 1971), degree of stigma exsertion (Grant, 1954; Breese, 1959), flower size (Rollins, 1963), pollen-ovule ratio (Lloyd, 1965; Cruden, 1977), and amount of fruit or seed set in the absence of pollinators (Lloyd, 1965; Harding et al., 1974). Few studies of plant breeding systems have addressed the problem of how well the presence of these floral features can be used to predict outcrossing rates of plant populations, or whether variation among populations in the expression of these features is heritable. This latter question is especially relevant to studies concerned with the evolution of plant breeding systems (e.g., Lloyd, 1965; Moore and Lewis, 1965; Baker, 1966; Ornduff, 1972; Arroyo, 1973; Rick et al., 1978; Solbrig and Rollins, 1977). This paper presents the results of an investigation of breeding system variation in the California annual plant, Gilia

An association between a floral trait and inbreeding depression.
Inbreeding depression is a general phenomenon that is well documented in many plants and animals. Furthermore, it is generally considered to be the driving force behind mating-system evolution. Traditionally, the focus has been on the mean level of inbreeding depression in populations. However, more recently, the variation in inbreeding depression among individuals within populations has been s...
متن کاملIs floral structure a reliable indicator of breeding system in the Brassicaceae?
This study investigated the usefulness of floral characters as a potential indicator of breeding system in the Brassicaceae. Initially, pod set, seed set and pollen tube growth experiments were carried out to confirm the breeding systems of 53 lines representing 25 different cultivated and weedy species from the Brassicaceae. The results of the pod set tests clearly differentiated between self-...
متن کاملCorrelated evolution of mating system and floral display traits in flowering plants and its implications for the distribution of mating system variation.
Reduced allocation to structures for pollinator attraction is predicted in selfing species. We explored the association between outcrossing and floral display in a broad sample of angiosperms. We used the demonstrated relationship to test for bias against selfing species in the outcrossing rate distribution, the shape of which has relevance for the stability of mixed mating. Relationships betwe...
متن کاملEstimation of the outcrossing rate for annual Asian wild rice under field conditions
The Asian wild rice, Oryza rufipogon, has partial outcrossing behavior and shows high levels of genetic variation. To estimate an accurate outcrossing rate of annual form of O. rufipogon, two backcross lines (Lines R1 and R2) between Oryza sativa Nipponbare and O. rufipogon W630 were examined under field conditions. A chromosome survey confirmed that these lines had wild chromosomal segments at...
متن کاملThe role of breeding system and inbreeding depression in the maintenance of an outcrossing mating strategy in Silene virginica (Caryophyllaceae).
The goal of this study was to understand the interaction among breeding system, mating system, and expression of inbreeding depression in the hermaphroditic, primarily hummingbird-pollinated, iteroparous, short-lived perennial Silene virginica. We performed hand-selfed and hand-outcrossed pollinations in the field, conducted detailed floral observations within individual flowers and plants, and...
