In combination they focus through a crystal lens, representing microscopy, to shed light upon disease, represented by a vanquished dragon, on a black background, indicating the darkness of the unknown. The bordering wheat is infected with black ergot fungus to signify the importance of the causation of disease in clinical pathology. The Presidency, the name of the Association, and the date of the foundation are shown on the surrounding scroll and the office is represented by a rising sun.
