Why Do Some Universities Generate More Start-ups than Others
نویسندگان
چکیده
The results of this study provide insight into why some universities generate more new companies to exploit their intellectual property than do others. We compare four different explanations for cross-institutional variation in new firm formation rates from university technology licensing offices (TLOs) over the 1994–1998 period—the availability of venture capital in the university area; the commercial orientation of university research and development; intellectual eminence; and university policies. The results show that intellectual eminence, and the policies of making equity investments in TLO start-ups and maintaining a low inventor’s share of royalties increase new firm formation. The paper discusses the implications of these results for university and public policy. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Start-up Complexity and the Thickness of Regional Input Markets
Although there is a large and rapidly growing literature on the determinants of regional variation in new firm formation, relatively little is known about the interrelation between the characteristics of start-up firms and urban structure. It is only recently that scholars of urban economics have suggested a theoretical link between the thickness of regional input markets and the complexity of ...

We use detailed longitudinal data on firms, human capital and universities to study the impact of geographical proximity to knowledge sources and local absorptive capacity on the location of knowledge-based start-ups in the Portuguese regions. There are significant differences in new firm formation in knowledge based sectors among Portuguese regions. Using municipalities as the regional unit of...

This paper investigates the impact of new firms’ quality on the magnitude of their employment effects. In particular, start-ups in manufacturing industries generate larger direct and ove...
متن کاملENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INFORMATION ASYMMETRY: Theory and Evidence from the University of California
Why do inventors found firms? I address this question by examining start-ups founded by University of California faculty and graduate students. I first present a theoretical framework to capture the contracting relationship between an inventor and a potential licensee. I propose that information asymmetry between an inventor and an outside firm raises the cost of licensing for the firm. This co...

This fledgling Finnish language industry has strong academic roots – a majority of the Finnish IT companies that are primarily involved in creating and p...
