Nouns and Verbs in Tagalog: a reply to Foley
نویسنده
چکیده
There is an old saying to the effect that “any English noun can be verbed.” In Tagalog too it appears that any noun can be verbed; and moreover, that any verb can be nouned. If this is true, can we really maintain a distinction between these two categories in Tagalog? As Foley (1998) points out, this question has been a matter of serious debate for almost 100 years, and opinion among specialists in Philippine languages continues to be divided.

On Some Ways to Test Tagalog Nominalism from a Crosslinguistic Perspective
Daniel Kaufman's core proposal is that much of what is typologically special about Tagalog syntax is rooted in the language having nouns but not verbs as its core lexical categories. He sees this at two levels. First, bare roots in Tagalog are nominal rather than verbal; for example, bili on its own means 'price bought for' rather than 'buy'. Second, he claims that fully inflected " verbs " in ...

More recent cross-linguistic naming studies on children in German, Turkish,...
متن کاملIs regularization determined by semantics, or grammar, or both? Comments on Kim, Marcus, Pinker, Hollander & Coppola (1994).
Kim, Marcus, Pinker, Hollander & Coppola (1994) argue that the preference children and adults show for regular inflection for verbs and nouns with novel meanings (e.g. The batter flew/flied out to centre field) should be attributed to their grammatically based sensitivity to the derivations of these verbs and nouns. However, it could also be that speakers avoid the use of irregular forms to avo...
