NATURALLY SPEAKING: The Naturalness Criterion and Physics at the LHC

چکیده

Almost every branch of science has its own version of the “naturalness criterion”. In environmental sciences, it refers to the degree to which an area is pristine, free from human influence, and characterized by native species [2]. In mathematics, its meaning is associated with the intuitiveness of certain fundamental concepts, viewed as an intrinsic part of our thinking [3]. One can find the use of naturalness criterions in computer science (as a measure of adaptability), in agriculture (as an acceptable level of product manipulation), in linguistics (as translation quality assessment of sentences that do not reflect the natural and idiomatic forms of the receptor language). But certainly nowhere else but in particle physics has the mutable concept of naturalness taken a form which has become so influential in the development of the field.

Expectations for Lhc from Naturalness: Modified vs. Sm Higgs Sector

Common lore has it that naturalness of electroweak breaking in the SM requires new physics (NP) at Λ < ∼ 2− 3 TeV, hopefully within the reach of LHC. Moreover the Higgs should be light (m h < ∼ 219 GeV) to pass electroweak precision tests (EWPT). However one should be prepared for " unexpected " (although admittedly unpleasant) results at LHC, i.e. no NP and/or a heavy Higgs. We revisit recent ...

‌قید‌های تک Z روی مدل ماده‌ تاریک فرمیونی با واسطه شبه اسکالر در LHC

In this research we study the Mono-Z signature along with dark matter production at the LHC in a renormalizable dark matter model. We look at processes with L+L-+MET in the final state. We simulate signal and background events at central mass energy 14 TeV We then evaluate the LHC sensitivities for some points in the model parameter space for two integrated luminosities L=100 fb-1 and L=1 ab-1 ...

Physics Potential of the Lhc

The basic aim of physics studies at the LHC is to unravel the mechanism responsible for the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Standard Model (SM). In the currently accepted theoretical picture, this translates into finding ‘direct’ experimental evidence for the Higgs sector. TeV scale supersymmetry (SUSY) provides a very attractive solution to the ‘naturalness’ problem that theories with ele...

On the eve of the LHC: conceptual questions in high-energy physics

The LHC is an opportunity to make a change. By thinking, and speaking publicly, about fundamental concepts that underlie physical theory, the physicist may both accrue public interest in his work and contribute to the analysis of the foundations of modern physics. We start by several remarks on the scientific and societal context of today’s theoretical physics. Major classes of models for physi...

The Higgs: so simple yet so unnatural

We present a concise outlook of particle physics after the first LHC results at 7-8 TeV. The discovery of the Higgs boson at 126 GeV will remain as one of the major physics discoveries of our time. But also the surprising absence of any signals of new physics, if confirmed in the continuation of the LHC experiments, is going to drastically change our vision of the field. At present the indicati...
