Semantic Composition via Probabilistic Model Theory

چکیده
Semantic composition remains an open problem for vector space models of semantics. In this paper, we explain how the probabilistic graphical model used in the framework of Functional Distributional Semantics can be interpreted as a probabilistic version of model theory. Building on this, we explain how various semantic phenomena can be recast in terms of conditional probabilities in the graphical model. This connection between formal semantics and machine learning is helpful in both directions: it gives us an explicit mechanism for modelling context-dependent meanings (a challenge for formal semantics), and also gives us well-motivated techniques for composing distributed representations (a challenge for distributional semantics). We present results on two datasets that go beyond word similarity, showing how these semantically-motivated techniques improve on the performance of vector models.

A Descriptive Framework for the Field of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery
s of forty-nine regular papers from PAKDD 2005 [Ho et al. 2005], which were not used in the framework building process, were collected and analyzed to see if they fit in the categories identified by grounded theory. The abstract of each article was analyzed to identify the primary objective(s) the author(s) are addressing. Take the article “Adjusting Mixture Weights of Gaussian Mixture Model vi...
متن کاملThe Symbiosis of Human and Semantic Technology Through the Lens of Actor-Network Theory
Background: Semantic technologies (STs) have made machine reasoning possible by providing intelligent data management methods. This capability has created new forms of interaction between humans and STs, which is called "semantic interaction." The increasing spread of this form of interaction in daily life reveals the need to identify the factors affecting it and introduce the requirements of...
متن کاملMonocular 3D Human Motion Tracking Using Dynamic Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis
We propose a new statistical approach to human motion modeling and tracking that utilizes probabilistic latent semantic (PLSA) models to describe the mapping of image features to 3D human pose estimates. PLSA has been successfully used to model the co-occurrence of dyadic data on problems such as image annotation where image features are mapped to word categories via latent variable semantics. ...
متن کاملModal Specifications for Probabilistic Timed Systems
Modal automata are a classic formal model for component-based systems that comes equipped with a rich specification theory supporting abstraction, refinement and compositional reasoning. In recent years, quantitative variants of modal automata were introduced for specifying and reasoning about component-based designs for embedded and mobile systems. These respectively generalize modal specifica...
متن کاملProbabilistic Rewrite Theories: Unifying Models, Logics and Tools
Probabilistic rewrite theories are proposed as a general semantic framework that unifies many existing models of probabilistic systems for both discrete and continuous time and suggests new models such as probabilistic hybrid systems. Probabilistic temporal logics for existing models are likewise unified in two logics, namely PRTL and PRTL∗ that we develop. Having a common semantic framework en...
