چکیده
Tuberous sclerosis is a rare disease and pulmonary manifestations are extremely rare. Like pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis, tuberous sclerosis of the lung affects only women of childbearing age and carries a very poor prognosis. The radiological and pathological features of the two conditions in the lung are indistinguishable and some authors therefore consider lymphangioleiomyomatosis to be a forme fruste of tuberous sclerosis,1 although others believe that the relationship is unclear.2 In pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis bilateral oophorectomy and high dose progesterone have sometimes been beneficial,2`4 and antioestrogens have been advocated on theoretical grounds.5 In this report we describe two patients with pulmonary tuberous sclerosis; both were treated with tamoxifen and progesterone.

Estrogen enhances whereas tamoxifen retards development of Tsc mouse liver hemangioma: a tumor related to renal angiomyolipoma and pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis.
Pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis and abdominal angiomyolipoma are related lesions for which there is no authentic animal model. Both of these proliferative lesions occur in sporadic patients, and at much higher frequency in patients with tuberous sclerosis, which is due to mutations in the TSC1 and TSC2 genes. Tsc1+/- and Tsc2+/- mice frequently develop liver hemangioma. We found that the Tsc...

A 44-year-old woman was seen with the clinical and histologic picture of lymphangiomyomatosis syndrome. She also had dermatologic and neurologic stigmata of tuberous sclerosis. After the development of a recurring chylothorax, she had a downhill course unresponsive to dietary, bronchodilator, corticosteroid and progesterone therapy. In an open lung specimen, the search for steroid receptor for ...

We report the case of a young woman with tuberous sclerosis who developed a chylous pleural effusion after several invasive procedures for treatment of recurring pneumothoraces. Oophorectomy was rejected by the patient and progesterone therapy initiated. Medroxyprogesterone acetate administration led to a complete disappearance of the chylothorax in 8 months. The patient was kept on therapy, an...

A 47-year-old woman is presented with pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (PLAM) involving the bilateral lung and slight pulmonary function abnormality. Computed tomography scan showed bilateral microcyst formation in the lung. Histologically, proliferating spindle shaped cells with centrilobular emphysema were main findings. Immunohistochemically, these proliferating spindle shaped cells were p...

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease that affects young women of child-bearing age. It is characterized by the presence of cystic changes in the pulmonary parenchyma, repeated pneumothorax, chylothorax and renal angiomyolipomas, and in the majority of cases it is accompanied by a progressive loss in lung function.1 In the last two decades, there has been an increase in the understan...
