چکیده

D ecreased availability of nitric oxide (NO), which contributes to the development of diabetes vascular complications (1), is partially related to asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). ADMA is an endogenous NO synthase inhibitor (2) and a competitive inhibitor of cellular L-arginine uptake (3). ADMA has been associated with atherosclerosis in nondiabetic populations (4) and with diabetic nephropathy in type 1 diabetes (5). In humans, the stereoisomer of ADMA, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), is produced in equivalent quantities; though it does affect NO synthesis, SDMA may compete with arginine for cellular uptake (6). Our objective was to evaluate the relationship between plasma ADMA and diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic Retinopathy Is Associated With Elevated Serum Asymmetric and Symmetric Dimethylarginines

OBJECTIVE Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and l-arginine directly influence nitric oxide production. Our objective was to test whether serum ADMA, SDMA, or l-arginine levels correlate with diabetic retinopathy subtype or severity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 162 subjects with type 1 diabetes and 343 with type 2 diabetes, of whom 329 subjects h...

Renal Function but Not Asymmetric Dimethylarginine Is Independently Associated with Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes

Background. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is associated with macrovascular disease and possibly with microangiopathy in type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We tested the hypothesis that ADMA is related to diabetic retinopathy (DR) independently of macrovascular disease. Methods. This cross-sectional study included 127 T2DM patients selected to achieve equal distributions of patients with and without m...

Elevated plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine as a marker of cardiovascular morbidity in early diabetic nephropathy in type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE Increased plasma concentration of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, has been associated with endothelial dysfunction, insulin resistance, and atherosclerosis in nondiabetic populations. In end-stage renal failure, circulating ADMA is elevated and a strong predictor of cardiovascular outcome. This study investigated the relation betwe...

Is There a Correlation Between Plasma Levels of Asymmetric Dimethylarginine (ADMA) Levels and Atherosclerosis in Type 2 Diabetes Patients in Turkey?

Date of acceptance / Kabul tarihi: December 5, 2016 / 5 Aralık 2016 ABSTRACT: Is there a correlation between plasma levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes patients in Turkey? Objective: Atherosclerosis is very common in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). We aimed to investigate the relationship between asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) whi...
