The intermediate role of hydroxylamine in nitrate assimilation has been suggested by observations that different organisms form ammonia from hydroxylamine in vivo, and that hydroxylamine occurs in nutrient media and cells. In further support are recent investigations describing enzymatic preparations which catalyze the reduction of hydroxylamine to ammonia. Taniguchi et al. (J. Biochem. (Japan), 40, 175,1953) found that cell free extracts of Bacillus pumilis mediated the reduction of hydroxylamine to ammonia using reduced methylene blue as the electron donor. Of special interest is the report by Klausmeier and Bard (J. Bacteriol., 68, 129, 1954) that cell free extracts of Bacillus subtilis contain an ammonium dehydrogenase which reversibly catalyzes the reduction of hydroxylamine by reduced diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPNH) to ammonia and diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN):
