Individual laboratory-measured discount rates predict eld behavior
نویسندگان
چکیده
We estimate discount rates of 555 subjects using a laboratory task and nd that these individual discount rates predict inter-individual variation in eld behaviors (e.g., exercise, BMI, smoking). The correlation between the discount rate and each eld behavior is small: none exceeds 0.28 and many are near 0. However, the discount rate has at least as much predictive power as any variable in our dataset (e.g., sex, age, education). The correlation between the discount rate and eld behavior rises when eld behaviors are aggregated: these correlations range from 0.09-0.38. We present a model that explains why speci c intertemporal choice behaviors are only weakly correlated with discount rates, even though discount rates robustly predict aggregates of intertemporal decisions.

متن کاملStress hormones predict hyperbolic time-discount rates six months later in adults.
OBJECTIVES Stress hormones have been associated with temporal discounting. Although time-discount rate is shown to be stable over a long term, no study to date examines whether individual differences in stress hormones could predict individuals' time-discount rates in the relatively distant future (e.g., six month later), which is of interest in neuroeconomics of stress-addiction association. ...

Time Preferences and Criminal Behavior One main motive behind lengthy prison terms for serious crime is to deter potential offenders from engaging in crime. Yet, economic theory predicts that the scope for punishment as acting as a deterrent depends on how much individuals discount future events when balancing the immediate utility of the crime and the costs of a potential future punishment. If...
متن کاملThe neural representation of value and individual differences in human intertemporal choice
Intertemporal choices, or decisions that involve tradeoffs between rewards and time, are ubiquitous in our daily lives. The tendency to devalue, or discount, future rewards has been linked to maladaptive long-term health and financial outcomes. Despite their broad clinical relevance, individual differences in discounting preferences are poorly understood. In this thesis, we make progress on the...
